Hi Everyone,

Roseanna Ellis recently spent some time applying EFT in a nursing home rehab center.  Her prolific results are given in this article.  This would be a good one to show to other rehab centers as a way to show how much could be done to accelerate healing.

Hugs, Gary

Dear Gary,

With business being slow due to the fact that I live off the beach, I decided to work for a month or so doing physical therapy in a rehab center within a nursing home. These are people that were in hospital who can’t go home yet because they are unable to care for themselves and thus must spend a few weeks getting better.

Normally I hate working in a nursing home because it is not challenging enough for me. But to my surprise I have had an amazing time in the past two weeks. I have been going around tapping everyone, from nurses to aids to bosses to patients.

First my boss complained of severe Right knee pain and tightness. Her 0-10 intensity level was an 8 for pain and in Range of motion she was only 70/90. I only worked on her for about 10 minutes for pain and for tightness. She got off the mat and wide-eyed said, ” I can’t believe it but my pain is completely gone. I checked her hamstring range and it had increased to 90/90 a perfect hamstring.

Next one of my patients who was in her 80′s was feeling sick to her stomach and had been that way for a few days. The nurse had called the doctor and he agreed to send her to the hospital for tests. I was to walk her in therapy first. I asked her if I could tap her to get rid of her stomach pain. She agreed and within 10 minutes she was up and moving fine without much pain.

I saw her in the hallway later that day and asked how the tests went? She answered, ” I changed my mind and decided I was feeling much better and the nurse canceled my hospital visit.

This kind of stuff happened all day every day with all my patients. I won’t bore you but two I must tell.

One gentleman, in his 50s, not my patient, but I interfered in his therapy (like I know everything right?) Well he had had a brain operation and was left paralyzed on his left leg. To make matters worse his right shoulder was classified as a frozen shoulder which was hindering his progress because he needed his arms to pull himself up in the parallel bars. His range was about 90 degrees and normal range was 180. He also had severe pain upon movement of that arm.

Well I worked with him for five minutes while his therapist was seeing to another patient. Within that time I got about 30 degrees extra movement and the pain had diminished about 20%.

The next day I asked his therapist if I could work a little more on him. I allowed her to test his range. She tested it at 130/180 which was where EFT had got him the day before. I worked EFT for 10 min. and I called his therapist over again to re-measure him. Now normally range like this takes weeks and weeks to achieve, that is why I wanted her to re-test. She looked a little annoyed thinking that she had just tested him and why was I asking her again. To her shock it was 175/180, and the man had no pain through the motion. I downloaded your EFT manual and gave it to him today to read and told him to apply it to himself every hour on the hour for a few days.

Another EFT miracle happened yesterday. One of my patients who is 72 years old, has had a very difficult time walking. Her balance is very poor. I had been working with her for a few days just doing regular therapy, when yesterday she said ” I am so afraid of falling, what happens if I fall and I can’t get up?. Well I began to tap her for her fear of falling, I worked for about ten minutes until I felt secure enough to walk her again to test her fear. Well she walked with so much control that it shocked me (which usually doesn’t happen too much any more). Then she shocked me further when she stated” I have not walked this good since I was in my 30s. You should have seen her smile.

Today I worked on her some more. Then I had her walking backwards, without loss of balance. She pushed herself around the nursing home shouting how great she was able to walk. She told me that her husband didn’t believe it and that he wants to come to see her in therapy. She is forbidden to walk unless she is in therapy because of her history of falls.

If only out-patient facilities were willing to let me work on patients like this. But I know it would never happen. To get a frozen shoulder or a replaced knee better within a few visits would put them out of business in a very short time. For now I grab what I can get away with.

Love, Roseanna

New Look at Pain Relief

“EFT offers great healing benefits.” Deepak Chopra, MD

“Where did the pain go?”, is the common response from most EFT newcomers. Properly applied, an estimated 80% achieve noticeable to complete pain relief within minutes and the result is often long lasting. No meds, surgeries or other medical interventions involved … and you can do it for yourself. You can also learn the EFT basics for free with our Free EFT Get Started Package or you can save time and dive right in to become an expert with our DVD Libraries.

Read this informative press release: Pain Relief – New “Acupuncture without Needles” Technique Reports 80% Effectiveness, Often Out-Performing Drugs

Why such dramatic relief?: EFT aims at two vital causes of pain that are largely outside the medical approach. This is why EFT often works for pain relief where nothing else will.

Cause #1 – Disrupted Subtle Energies: It has long been known that subtle energies circulate throughout our bodies and that the free flow of this energy can be vital to our health. Interrupt this energy and the result can be pain and disease. Stop it altogether and you may be headed toward death. Eastern health practices have been based on this concept for over 5,000 years. Einstein’s findings also relate to our bodies being composed of energy.

It should be no surprise, then, that repairing any disruptions in these subtle energies can lead to symptom and pain relief. Fortunately, the easy to learn EFT process allows even beginners to improve this free flow by stimulating (tapping on) certain “release points” on the body.

Cause #2 – Negative Emotions (Anger, Trauma, Fear, etc): It is a well established medical fact that our emotions trigger varying chemicals in our bodies. Joyous emotions can produce healing chemicals while negative emotions can create disease causing chemistry into our systems. For example, you may be familiar with how stress might contribute to ulcers or high blood pressure. We suggest that negative emotions may be a major cause of pain too. We have seen evidence of this repeatedly as pain subsides once negative emotions have been addressed with EFT.

Properly done, the EFT process address both of these causes simultaneously. Just read the actual cases below.

EFT is a Universal Healing Aid and expands well beyond pain management. It is easy to apply and often works where nothing else will. To get started with EFT just watch the free 7 minute intro movie on the left. You can then Learn EFT for little or no cost.

By Allan D. Kruest Sr.

This is a 75 minute wonder. We live in a senior mobile home park in Las Vegas, and about 2 1/2 years ago, after downloading Gary’s free manual and using it on myself with great results, I had this event happen.

On my daily walk, I would on occasion stop and converse with a widowed lady of 84 years and attempt to cheer her up. This day I saw that she had her right arm in a sling, and I asked her what happened. She told me she had been putting clothes and such in a series of suitcases, in what she said was in preparation for a move to Colorado to a senior hospice.

She overloaded one suitcase on a bed, and when she attempted to take it off the bed, not realizing the weight, she held on to it and it pulled her shoulder out of the socket. Bad move, and a friend took her to the doctor and he x-rayed the shoulder and said that the muscles and ligaments were injured and that all he could do was to put her in a sling and that she would be lucky to use the arm in 6 months, if ever.

She was in extreme pain if she tried to use the arm. I told her I had learned a procedure that may help, and would she let me use it on her. She said yes and I spent about 35 minutes explaining EFT and the points to tap.

On starting, she said the 0-10 level of intensity of the pain was a 20. We started the tapping and the first round brought the pain down to an 8 out of 10. She was flabbergasted, as this event had happened less than a week ago, and even at night she would awaken with extreme pain if she moved.

I proceeded with the second round of tapping, and upon asking her what was the pain now, she said it was gone. She then removed the sling, and whirled her arms about and was like a child that had a pain removed. Needless to say, I was then the one that was flabbergasted.

She went back the following week to her doctor with her sling in place and when asked how the pain was, she tore the sling off and whirled her arms around and the doctor, stood with his mouth open and asked her what had happened. She told him about me, and what I had done, and upon recovering his senses he said it was probably a freak event. She said to him that he would be wise to look into this and he said he was too busy to follow weird protocols.

She left and has not had a pain since and uses her arm as she always has.

Hi Everyone,

Kaye Bewley from the UK gives us this brief account of clearing up a shoulder injury that just wasn’t supposed to go away. Nonetheless it did and this caused her client to say, “Ten years, I’ve lived with that awful thing – how is that possible?” Please consult physicians on all medical issues.

By Kaye Bewley, EFT-ADV

Hello Gary,

Anne asked me to help her with a problem she suffered from for ten years. She had fallen off a horse and landed on her left shoulder. Everyone thought she had broken it because she was in so much pain, but x-rays showed nothing. Since that date, she’s had an annoying click, rather like a clock mechanism – every time she moves it round in a circle, when swimming, climbing onto horses, or just raising her arms “it’s like a clunk’ she said. And I heard it. Really nasty little sound and quite loud.

We rated it at a 10 then did a round of tapping on the KC point …

Even though I have this clunk in my left shoulder….

We did two rounds of tapping on the face, shoulders and UA then she moved her arm round in a big circle. The clunk was still there – although only very faint. She was amazed and rated it at 5 – but said she accepted that it wouldn’t disappear entirely, “it was a ligament after all” (she’s a trained nurse and, of course, knows the body inside out).

We went through another round – and still a 5, so we went through the 9 Gamut procedure. Anne circled her arm again and looked at me as shock registered all over her face. “I can’t believe that”, was all she kept repeating. She circled her arm several times, but there was no sound, no annoying feeling of a clunk … she kept doing it to find it … I didn’t want her to hurt herself so asked her to ‘calm down’ with the circling, but she was too amazed. There was one tiny clunk, more of a minor ‘click’ but she was totally amazed and pleased.

“Ten years, I’ve lived with that awful thing – how is that possible?”

I only wish I’d had Anne’s shoulder clunk on video – if ever I had any doubts about EFT, they were squashed in those ten minutes!!!!

Thanks Gary for bringing EFT into our lives. It has helped so many people that I know.

Collapsing emotional issues avoids shoulder surgery

Please send this one to your physician as it represents clear evidence that surgery can often be avoided when emotional causes are properly addressed. I know that violates many medical beliefs but we have too many success stories like this to ignore. Many thanks to Russell Cunningham from Australia for being persistent with his client and entering boldly into some intense emotional issues.

Hi Gary,

Your EFT CD’s have exceeded our expectations they’re entertaining, motivating and informative. We’re often inspired by particular examples, to use EFT on conditions which appear to have a purely physical cause. Below is one such example.

Sally initially came to us a year ago with abusive relationship issues. She arrived nursing her arm and shoulder obviously in significant pain. Her job as a legal secretary involved carrying heavy books & files and was seen to be the primary cause of the problem. This shoulder pain had kept her from this work for 2 years and had not responded to physiotherapy, anti inflammatory drugs, pain killers, and a number of other therapies. She was due to have surgery to “burn out the nerves to her shoulder.” At rest she described the pain as 7/10 and attempting to raise the arm to shoulder level brought the pain up to 10/10. She was unable to lift her arm above shoulder level.

I asked her permission to focus on her shoulder problem first as this was likely to be connected with the relationship issues and it would be easier to clear other issues when she is pain free. Following another example from the CD’s I told her we had about 50:50 chance of success and that we would just experiment and see what results we get. (This helped take the pressure off both of us).

We started tapping on Even though I have “this shoulder pain”, “this ache in my shoulder”, “pain when I try to lift my arm” etc. after each round I would ask to describe the remaining pain and use her words. Pain intensity levels were dropping slowly and from the history of non response to other therapies I suspected a lot of PR. We mainly used the basic recipe plus the top of the head, with some short cuts and extra focus on KC, Sore spot, CB & Gamut.

I told Sally that I would guess some of the root causes, just keep tapping and saying what I say, trusting that if I’m not spot on her unconscious mind will adjust it to whatever is required. We continued tapping on “This is a physical problem and part of me can’t believe that tapping will fix it.”, “I don’t deserve to get better”, “I need this shoulder problem to get me out of the job I hate,” “I will loose my compensation payout if my shoulder gets better”……

Sally’s physiology was looking more relaxed with fewer creases on her forehead. I wasn’t stopping to get intensity levels on these, it seemed there were so many aspects we tapped pretty solidly for at least 20 minutes on these and similar issues…… Sally’s mum had been chronically ill and was looked after by Sally’s older sister. Sally was distraught when her sister left home and married Even though “I need this problem to get sympathy” “I need this pain to get love” “I need this pain to get attention”

At one point the pain shifted to her elbow in 2 rounds it went from 4/10 to 0.

“Even though I need this shoulder pain to avoid Geoff” (Her abusive partner who ran a brothel) She was looking much more relaxed the but shoulder pain seemed to be stuck at about 2.5/10 so I started being provocative, exaggerating suspected issues to bring up any remaining emotion. “Even though Geoff raped me” “Geoff treats me like a prostitute”….. “He only wants me for sex”…

After a total of 20 – 30 minutes Sally was able to raise her arm directly over her head for the first time in 2 years. There was no pain, just a minor discomfort she described as less than 1/10. Sally cancelled her surgery, her shoulder continued pain free. We had several more sessions over the next few weeks using EFT and occasionally NLP on child hood, mum, dad, relationship issues and self esteem.

I was surprised a few months later when Sally phoned saying that some of the shoulder pain had returned (4/10) and there were “physical lumps” in her shoulder. After tapping for the pain, physical lumps and further relationship issues, not only had the pain gone but the “physical lumps” had disappeared.

That was twelve months ago now. I phoned Sally recently. She has moved out of that relationship and started a new career in real estate. Her shoulder and elbow remain pain free.

Hugs

Hi Everyone,

By Jerry Weber

I am a hairdresser and owner of The Health and Beauty Connection, which is not only a salon but half of the building is dedicated to wellness.

Everyday I am talking to clients about their health and Saturday I had a client who came in who I had not seen for a year. She could not lift her right arm more than about 30%. As the other clients watched I asked the lady if she would like to have her arm healed. Of course she said yes and I explained “this weird procedure.”

I am fairly new to EFT so I did the complete setup, tapping and gamut. The results of the first sequence was shocking as she lifted her arm up to where the elbow was straight out. She looked at her friend with disbelief and I asked her to do it one more time. The second time I only did the setup and tapping.

When I finished the salon watched as she kept raising her arm until she was able to raise her arm all the way to the ceiling – with no pain. Tears started flowing, the salon clients cheered and all she kept saying was “God bless you.”

Thank you Gary for such an incredible tool to use. I have worked on about ten clients and every one of them received fabulous results (many 10 to 1) in just a FEW MINUTES.

Hi Everyone,

Dawson Church gives many EFT lectures and demonstrations. He describes this impressive on-stage result and says, “Half a century of muscle memory had been released by two minutes of EFT!”

Hugs, Gary

I was giving the keynote speech at a conference recently in front of about 200 people, and we had some time afterwards to do demonstrations. Several of the participants raised their hands as having musculoskeletal problems, so I worked with five of them on stage as a group.

One of them was a 67 year old nurse, and her problem was a limited range of motion problem (ROM) in one arm. She could place her left arm behind her back without any problem at all, but did not have the same ROM in her right arm. I used an instrument called a goniometer to measure the exact ROM in both arms.

The two segments of her unrestricted left arm could pivot to an angle of 66 degrees, while the best she could do with her impaired right arm was 80 degrees. She expressed great frustration at this limitation, which she’s had since early adulthood. I was taken aback by how vehemently she expressed her frustration. My mind, always skeptical, asked how EFT could possibly reverse a half century of a mechanical limitation between her humerus, and radius and ulna bones. My right brain is always happy to tell me how impossible rapid healing is.

I asked where in her body she felt the emotional charge, and she said that it was located in her solar plexus. I asked her a question I find very useful in EFT, “What’s the earliest memory you have of feeling that exact sensation in that exact location in your body?”

She unhesitatingly said that it was when she’d been given detention in elementary school, despite the fact that she had done nothing wrong. She had been very angry. She said her SUD intensity in her solar plexus was 8 out of 10 in intensity. We tapped on phrases like, “Even though my teacher unfairly gave me that detention…”

I also asked her what her teacher’s name was, since the more specific aspects of the experience you can tap on, the better, “Even though Miss Smith gave me the detention….” I asked her about other memories, like the faces of the children in her classroom, till her intensity level went down to zero on every aspect of the memory, and the feeling in her solar plexus.

I then had her turn her back toward the audience and we measured her ROM again. It was now 68 degrees, and the difference in mobility between her two arms was indistinguishable. Half a century of muscle memory had been released by two minutes of EFT! When you learn EFT, Gary will tell you to tap on the physical item as well as on the emotional aspects, and in private I will do both. However, when I demonstrate EFT to medical professionals, I usually ONLY work on the emotional issues, just to make the point that emotional distress contributes to virtually every physical ailment.

Part 1 of 4

If EFT is important in your life, as it is in mine, you must surely have imagined what it would be like if EFT were made readily available to people facing emergency medical conditions. For many years I have pictured desirable scenes which include the availability of EFT for patients in an Emergency Room, or for their distraught families in the waiting room; or have envisioned medics using EFT for patients in ambulances before they arrive at the hospital.

I have also thought about how it could be used pre-surgically and post-surgically and in connection with many different diagnostic procedures. There is no limit to the ideas one can come up with on this subject because this is such an obvious application of EFT, and will be so extremely practical when it occurs — and it will occur, this is simply a matter of time and diligent work by those who recognize its value.

In my report to you today I have the satisfying experience of telling you about EFT’s recent application within a hospital. The important thing about this story is that it is true. In order to protect the confidentiality of patients and the staff of that hospital I will disguise the name of the hospital and the very able EFT-practitioner nurse who has reported some exciting results.

“Chris” is a respected member of the staff in a community-based, nonprofit hospital that is more open to new ideas than most hospitals, although scarcely radical in its outlook. She directs an outpatient cardiac rehabilitation program at that facility.

What is particularly important about what I am going to tell you is the manner in which Chris has introduced EFT into this hospital. The way she has done it can serve as a model to anyone attempting to bring EFT to medical settings. I think you will be interested in how she has gone about this.

The first important thing that Chris did was make sure that she learned EFT thoroughly herself and had used it on herself with excellent results, before trying it with others. She bought all of Gary Craig’s tapes, subscribed to and carefully studied every issue of Gary’s e-newsletter and of my own. She passed the Basic and Advanced examinations and earned both EFT Certificates of Completion — proof that she has thoroughly studied and understood what Gary Craig is teaching in his fundamental courses.

She began using EFT on herself about two years ago but only ten months ago did she start using it with staff and patients in the hospital where she works. What she did in this respect teaches us a great deal. She did not to rush in to the hospital administrators enthusiastically recommending a new program that she wanted to institute there. Instead, she helpfully began to meet the needs of various staff members for assistance with some of their own personal issues or problems, when these arose.

When Chris heard of a staff member facing a problem causing them special stress she would often volunteer to help them with EFT. She used EFT initially for one staff member who had claustrophobia with some remarkable results and a friend of EFT was created then and there. She used it with another staff member who was experiencing dizziness and nausea because of her reaction to the death of her son’s close friend. After the woman tapped on that issue for a few rounds it entirely cleared up –another friend of EFT had been born.

Chris then used it for flashbacks experienced by a staff member who had witnessed a woman killed in the street in front of her own home. This trauma was cleared up by the use of EFT and another friend of EFT was created within the hospital. Chris also used it on a nursing supervisor in the hospital who initially expressed total disbelief about EFT. This woman’s shoulder was frozen and she could not lift her arm. To start with she had a distress level of 8 (on a 10 point scale). Her immobility went down to a 5, then to a 2 on the second round, and this woman could now raise her arm above her head. Chris left the woman still skeptical, however, and when she returned the next day she told Chris that the pain was still there, but that she didn’t want to try EFT on it (some people’s prejudices die hard!.) Chris simply said, “Well, if you want to try it again let me know.” A few days later Chris received an email saying, “I believe in this… I think?.” Chris worked with her again and she was able to make still more progress with her shoulder.

These are only a few of the instances where Chris has been able to help staff members and thereby gain support for EFT within the hospital. Gradually the word has been spreading about EFT. It has become known in different parts of the hospital because of firsthand experience, and now it is beginning to be used with patients.

Here is an example of how this “get to know EFT personally” policy has been working within the hospital. Recently a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit contacted Chris with regard to a problem she and other staff members were having with a particular patient. A woman in the ICU was experiencing severe nerve pain in her legs whenever her legs were touched, even with a feather touch. This presented a serious problem because the woman refused to get out of bed or do any physical therapy.

When Chris arrived at her room, the patient’s husband was present, trying to persuade her to get out of bed, but neither he nor the nurses were getting anywhere with this. Chris kept things simple. She said to the woman, “I know a technique that might help.” and the woman agreed to try it. She adopted the set-up phrase, “Even though I have this excruciating pain in my legs…” Initially her pain was a 10 on a 0-10 but it had gone to a “0″ at the end of one round. She did not feel any pain whatsoever in her legs now — one of those amazing occurrences that Gary Craig refers to as “one minute wonders.” The patient was incredulous, as was her husband and the nursing staff.

The patient’s pain returned a couple of days later when she was scheduled to have an ultrasound procedure on her legs. The nurse asked her if she would like some pain medication to help her undergo the procedure, but she said, “No, I want to do that tapping.” Chris had instructed a nurse on the unit in EFT and the latter was able to run the patient through EFT again. Once more it worked – the pain subsided to “0″ and the patient was able to go through the ultrasound procedure without any difficulty.

This is only one of the instances where, right on the spot, in a hospital setting where it is so badly needed, EFT is now beginning to be used. I will have more to report about what Chris has been able to do in her hospital, in a future post.

In the meantime, I thank Chris in the name of all of us who respect EFT for what she is doing for the many future patients who will benefit from just such pioneering efforts.

Patricia Carrington, Ph.D.,

Part 2 of 4

Using EFT for Pre-Operative Patients

“Marie” (her actual name is disguised to protect patient confidentiality) is a nurse in a large hospital where she has been increasingly able to use this technique with patients. Her experience with the pre-operative use of EFT hopefully foreshadows many similar interventions in the future. I can envision a day when EFT is an accepted procedure in hospitals and a part of standard pre-operative protocol. This seems to be a vision worth holding for all of us.

Marie is well-known among the nursing personnel in her particular hospital because she heads an inpatient service. Also, she has helped many hospital staff members with their own problems by using EFT –not only a helpful gesture for the recipients, but a means of allowing EFT to become known and accepted within the hospital (See part 1 of this series above).

Recently Marie was summoned to a floor where a woman patient was terrified of an impending operation that was necessary and imminent. She was nearly hysterical due to her fear of the surgery, The nurses were at a loss as to what to do about this. Remembering Marie’s helpful EFT interventions under other circumstances, the clinical nurse specialist called Marie to come to the floor.

When she arrived, she found the patient distraught and terrified. Marie asked her if she would like to try “a simple technique to help you with your fear that involves light tapping on your face and upper body.”

The woman agreed and the set up phrase they formulated went as follows: “Even though I’m terrified of surgery…”

In the middle of the second round of tapping the patient stopped abruptly when she had reached the under- nose spot and exclaimed, “Oh! It’s gone!” She would have stopped EFT at that point had not the nurse specialist (the person who had called Marie to the room) insisted that she complete the round.

This patient’s panic was completely gone. She consented to surgery without a problem and the operation went smoothly, although there were delays. The staff was impressed. Word was spreading that EFT could be helpful.

Marie visited this woman the next day and while this patient did have some anger issues around the several delays before her procedure, she said she did not want to work on her anger. She felt the anger was justified and seemed to fear that EFT would take away her right to be angry — a frequent misconception about EFT. Actually, the fact is that while using EFT might have lessened the emotion of anger here, it might also have made Marie more effective in promoting EFT’s benefits to the hospital staff by showing how it can be used effectively to defuse emotionally upset patients.

Marie describes the following types of distress that patients are apt to experience preoperatively. These are well-known to nursing staffs. Here are some of them, not necessarily in order of severity or frequency:

Fear of anesthesia. This is a very common pre-op fear. It often involves a fear of saying or doing something inappropriate while under anesthesia. In addressing such a concern, one useful EFT statement might be: “Even though I’m afraid I will lose control and act inappropriately (under anesthesia), I choose to be appropriate and calm during the procedure.” This way of applying EFT uses the Choices Method which calls for constructing a statement reflecting the specific goals of the individual.

Fear of dying. To target this major fear, if the patient’s belief system is consistent with this notion, one might suggest the set-up phrase, “Even though I’m afraid of dying during the operation, I know that God will be with me at every moment.” For a patient who may not have such a spiritual perspective, one might suggest the phrase, “Even though I’m afraid of dying during the operation, I choose to handle whatever happens, beautifully” ,or “I choose to be calm and confident that everything will go smoothly.” The first of these phrases reflects the fact that not being able to HANDLE a crisis, or ultimately not being able to HANDLE the experience of dying, is often the most powerful and compelling fear of all.

Fear of Pain: A possible EFT Choice for this might be, “Even though I am afraid of pain after the surgery, I choose to be relaxed and have my pain fully under control.”

Fear of things going badly in surgery. A possible EFT Choice for this might be, “Even though I’m afraid the surgery will go badly, I choose to have it go exceptionally well and peacefully”.

Frustration with hospital routines or mistakes can often result in severe pre- or postoperative anxiety. Some of the distress may involve disruptive or upsetting roommates or frequent, disturbing night awakenings. EFT statements to target such distress might go, “Even though they woke me repeatedly last night when I needed sleep so badly, I choose to have my body feel deeply rested now and able to cope well with the surgery”

Marie has observed that the patients who have received EFT tend to think more clearly, make better decisions and cope better with whatever comes up. A beneficial spin-off of this is reduced problems for the hospital staff.

Another area in which she had used EFT very successfully is for those who are waiting anxiously in the OR waiting room for news of their loved ones. It can be of great help to such people during this tense period and she envisions the day when someone will be present in the Operating Room waiting area to help these people to use EFT.

She also notes that EFT can be used in preparation for surgery even when the patient does not exhibit anxiety. EFT produces a highly suggestible state very rapidly and specific requests to one’s own body to handle the surgery and postoperative condition can be extremely effective if embedded within the EFT procedure. These requests should be as specific as possible to get the best effect. For example, a non-anxious preoperative patient might tap on the positive reminder phrase ONLY (without using the negative phrase, “Even though..”) as follows:

“I ask my body to send pain-relieving chemicals to me throughout this operation and afterwards”. Specific directives to the body may be honored exactly if made during EFT tapping.

Or, such a patient might say:

“I ask my body to heal as quickly as possible” — with this positive phrase repeated at each tapping point.

An observation that Marie and I share is that many patients do not seem to want to go to the zero point on the intensity scale for their issue. This is particularly true for pain. My speculation is that the zero point is outside of these people’s belief systems and therefore is rejected. They are used to a familiar level of discomfort and when they get to a tolerable level (say when their pain has come down from a 10 or an 8 to a 4 on the Intensity Scale) they tend to stop. Few people are used to going for what they really want in any situation. They have been trained to settle for “better” and for “bearable,” so for many people that is the point where the nurse practitioner or medical assistant trained in EFT will have to let them stop. When EFT is used as a strategic intervention, such compromises are acceptable. However, should the patient want to follow up with more information about EFT, this could be provided to them.

Surrogate Tapping In the Hospital

Surrogate tapping, which is in effect tapping for someone other than one’s self, is still a ways down the road in terms of acceptance. However, its cousin, distant prayer, is quite readily accepted in many places the world over. People will often resort to prayer to heal a loved one even if they do not have deep spiritual convictions. It just seems a natural thing to do. Surrogate tapping is equally natural but as yet, because it does not invoke a spiritual being (although it can certainly do so if one wants), it somehow does not yet seem to fit neatly into the paradigm of healing.

Today I’m going to tell you about the interesting experience of a nurse whom I mentioned in Part 1 (above) in this series, “Chris”, and see what usefulness may be in the offing for medical personnel who elect to use surrogate tapping for their patients.

Chris heard that the husband of one of the nurses who worked for the hospital, had developed chest pain and experienced cardiac arrest. His condition was obviously critical and in order to save his life, the medical team had to “code” him (take extreme emergency measures for him) for one and half hours before he could be removed to the Intensive Care Unit.

When he arrived there his life was still in danger. He was on a ventilator and after several days, he developed severe respiratory distress and his chances of survival through the night were estimated at 50-50.

Chris had known this patient, “John”, as a very likeable man of 58 years who had diligently been trying to improve his health after an earlier heart attack. He was on her mind during that evening when, at home, she happened to be watching Gary Craig’s Ultimate Therapist videos, the very portion of those videos in fact where William Tiller was discussing surrogate tapping and “nonlocal” experiences.

As she heard him talk, Chris decided that there was nothing to lose by tapping for John who was still in critical condition in the hospital. She did this by tapping on herself as though she were John and used such sentences as:

“Even though my lungs are white, I choose to have the oxygen readily get to my tissues.”

Or,

“Even though my alveoli are filled with fluid, I choose to have oxygen flow through them easily to my tissues.”

“Even though I’m fighting the tube in my throat, I deeply and completely accept myself, and I choose to let it be OK.”

You will notice that the wording she used was very specific and the concepts very clear. She wanted to address specific medical issues and being a nurse was able to do so in a very precise manner.

The next morning when she arrived at the hospital she immediately inquired about John and was told by a staff member that he had taken a surprising turn for the better the evening before, although they were now concerned because his urine output was very poor and this was endangering him.

Chris now surrogate-tapped for the flow of urine to open up, and then went up to his bedside. She spoke with his wife and told her about the tapping she had done the night before, and that she had just tapped for the urine output. (The wife had used EFT with Chris in the past for a traumatic event.) The wife stated that he had just started to put out urine. When Chris returned to her department, she got a call from John’s wife saying that now he was pouring out urine and his blood pressure was dropping. “Tap for his blood pressure” she said.

Chris then tapped for his blood pressure to rise again, specifically directing the body to accomplish this. Within a matter of 15 minutes, his blood pressure had gone up 10 points and Chris returned to the wife in ICU and taught her how to surrogate tap for John. Both Chris and the wife then tapped together for him.

The first thing they tapped on was “Even though I’m not getting circulation in my fingers, I choose to have my blood flow naturally and easily into my hands and fingers.” As they tapped for this, John’s hands became so hot that another nurse thought that he had a fever. He did not, it was simply the return of the circulation. The rest of his arms were normal temperature.

Following this incident the word spread throughout the hospital floor and more nurses became interested in learning how to use EFT.

John recovered, returned home, and is doing well. Chris has since taught other nurses how to surrogate tap for their patients who are too ill to do this for themselves.

What does this indicate about the potential of surrogate tapping within the hospital setting?

First, it provides an additional avenue by which a nurse or other medical attendant can actively assist in the healing process for the patient under their care, and do so simply and with minimal training. It also provides an avenue by which the very seriously ill or comatose patient can be helped even though they are unable to tap or even to conceive of tapping because they are in such a critical condition. This would be an important plus for emergency health-care.

It is not inconceivable that surrogate tapping could become an approved team procedure for critical or seriously ill patients, giving the medical personnel medical and nursing personnel a sense of empowerment. A sense of futility with regard to what one can do to help a patient is one of the most frequent causes of burnout in medical personnel.

Another advantage, evident in the example given above, is that knowledgeable medical personnel can target the desired outcome in the very precise manner that even the patient themselves, were they conscious, might not be able to do. This is consistent with Gary Craig’s admonition to be as specific as possible in pinpointing the difficulties involved in any medical condition — here we simply extend the specificity to the outcome portion of the set-up phrase as well as the initial statement of the problem. Both need to be stated in very precise terms for greatest effect.

Chris agrees with me that surrogate tapping might be far more acceptable to many nurses than one might suspect. Although she has been pleasantly surprised by the acceptance of EFT by the staff, it is possible that surrogate tapping might be less readily accepted. Often the way we introduce something is crucial in terms of its acceptance. For some, introducing surrogate tapping as a simple form of nondenominational distant prayer might be the bridge that Gary Craig talks about to gaining acceptance. I believe that distant prayer and the study of this, as has been written about by such investigators as Dr. Larry Dossey may have helped to pave the way for surrogate tapping within medical settings.

However, some staff may want to get consent from the patient or their family before using surrogate tapping. There has been some controversy concerning healing prayer as to whether or not one must obtain a person’s consent before praying for that person’s recovery. Gary Craig has, however, persuasively argued that a recipient of surrogate tapping is not open to healing unless he/she “wants it”, whether this be on a conscious or subconscious level, in other words that one cannot force healing upon a person. I would concur with this. It may be however that some permission procedure might have to be instituted in certain hospital settings for legal reasons.

EFT for a ruptured Appendix

I want to tell you about a little boy of 11 years old whom we shall call “Bobby”. This is not his real name but I’m using it because many of his friends regularly surf the Internet and “might see me there.” His mother, however, has no objection to the real family name being used.

Bobby exemplifies for me the future that we are all hoping for in terms of strategic uses of the EFT. His story is surprising as well as inspiring.

To start at the beginning, Bobby comes from a family that I call an “EFT family”. His mother has been practicing the technique for many years and in fact, although she is not an EFT practitioner and does not use it professionally, she has taken and passed both the Basic and Advanced EFT Certificate of Completion exams, thereby demonstrating her thorough knowledge of Gary Craig’s work. She took the trouble to do this because she wanted to become “more proficient at using EFT for my family.”

Both of Anita’s children, her husband, and herself use EFT, and her youngest child Bobby were brought up “tapping.” When about 7 years old, Bobby had over 50 food allergies and his mother tapped endlessly for him to correct them. She did this surrogately (to find out about surrogate tapping go to the EFT Search Engine and enter “surrogate”). As a result, Bobby has overcome his allergies to a remarkable degree and is no longer symptomatic.

Anita usually taps for Bobby and repeats the EFT phrases out loud for him, but in recent years, as he has grown older, she usually does not have to tap surrogately. Bobby tells her when he wants EFT. This is generally when he is falling asleep at night and has various nighttime issues. His mother has the impression that, among other things, he loves the undivided attention he gets from his mom when she does EFT with him.

(Note: Tapping on a child rather than having the child tap on him/herself is not the only way to use EFT with children because even very young children of 3 and 4 years old can learn to tap on themselves. As you will see, however, it turned out to be a very effective approach in this case.)

Athough her teenage daughter often rolls her eyes when EFT is mentioned (she is, after all, an adolescent), if she is really in trouble she will also say, “Please tap for me Mom.”

Here then is the story of Bobby’s recent health crisis when he and his mom used EFT to remarkable effect.

Several weeks ago Bobby suddenly developed a severe pain in his abdomen. He could barely talk because he was in so much pain and could only remain in bed clutching his belly. He asked for EFT and his mother went to work using it while making an emergency call to their pediatrician. In the meanwhile she asked Bobby to “breathe through” the pain. They used the EFT phrase, “Even though I have this terrible pain, I’m an awesome kid and I know I’m going to feel better soon.”

The pain became much more bearable after this tapping but his mother noticed that he was favoring the right side of his body when he walked. However, upon examination, when the pediatrician pressed on his right lower abdomen, it was tender but he didn’t jump. It didn’t look to her like an emergency, however she decided to send him to the emergency room just to “make certain.”

They arrived at the emergency room in the morning but it wasn’t until early afternoon that the crucial blood test was done, and a CT Scan followed at 7 pm. There were many hours of waiting in the Emergency Room before it was discovered that, to everyone’s surprise, Bobby’s appendix had ruptured! He was immediately prepared for emergency surgery.

The amazing thing was Bobby’s way of handling the long hours of waiting in the ER and his pain during that time. His mother estimates that they tapped at least 70 percent of the time during that long wait. She tapped on him and at times repeated the words for him as well. She recalls that they tapped on such phrases as “Even though I’m afraid I’m going to have to have an operation, I’m an awesome kid.”

When he felt particularly out of control at what was being done to him (which was most of the time), they also used the phrase: “Even though all these things are being done to me and I can’t do anything about it, I know that Mom loves me.”

And later, in response to his expressed fear of having his appendix out and his strong wish to keep that “busted appendix”, they tapped on: “Even though if I keep my appendix I might die, I know I’ll get better if I have it taken out.”

Following this tapping he became much calmer and when he met the surgeon he liked him right away, and decided to tap on: “Even though I don’t want this operation, I’m an awesome kid and this guy is going to get me better.” Following this last round of tapping he looked straight at the surgeon and said, “OK! Let’s get it done!”

His mother, who had now been joined by her husband in the emergency room, stood by watching him in amazement. His parents were seeing a maturity in him they had never seen before. Now, instead of asking for his parents’ help in this distressing situation, the more he tapped, the more he was able to handle the situation himself. He no longer seemed to have anxiety about the operation itself and if a new issue arose that presented a fresh difficulty, he insisted they tap on it.

When Bobby was taken to the operating room, one of the surgical nurses asked what they were doing when they were tapping and his mother explained they were using an “acupuncture technique for anxiety.” Surprisingly, the nurse immediately supported their use of EFT although she didn’t know about this specific technique. She said that she had another job in an alternative health clinic in the city and added, “You know, this stuff really makes a difference.”

Anita then asked this nurse to pray for Bobby along with herself and his father, and the nurse said she would in her mind “talk” to Bobby about speed healing and send him good energy during the operation.

Anita tapped continuously in the waiting room outside of the OR while her husband made some urgent phone calls. Her anxiety went way down and out of exhaustion she had actually dozed off when the surgeon came out to greet them after the surgery and told them that the site of the operation had been “a mess”, but that the infection was so well contained that it had not spread at all. “Never in a million years would I have dreamed we would find this kind of situation when we got in.” he said, “He didn’t seem sick enough for this.” Anita is of the opinion that their extensive use of EFT may well have helped to contain the infection.

The surgeon expected Bobby to be in the hospital from four to seven days, although surprisingly he had no fever. Postoperatively they did even more tapping than before because Bobby was in serious pain and had to endure many needles. However, after he tapped about the needles, he didn’t obsess any more about people walking down the hall to approach his room to take blood. Before tapping, every time he heard footsteps he thought someone was coming to “stick him.” EFT took away that fear.

After the surgery they tapped a great deal for Bobby’s feelings of being out of control, and the result was that a surprising quiet authority came over the child. When hospital personnel came in with medications or injections that he did not feel ready for, he would politely say to them, “I don’t want to do that right now. Can I do it in an hour?” His mother doubts that she could have as effectively asserted herself under similar circumstances.

A specific example of the new maturity that he was now displaying was when one nurse missed his vein twice when trying to take blood and it was extremely uncomfortable for him. He turned to this nurse and said, “You’re not doing a very good job. Could you find someone else to do this?” So — the nurse did.

Bobby then asked the hospital authorities, “What do I have to do to get these things out of my arm?” They explained to him that he needed to be able to walk down the hall, to have had a good bowel movement and be eating a regular diet. He then set out to make these things happen and was soon able to pass all these tests. To everyone’s surprise, Bobby was released from the hospital two and a half days after surgery instead of the expected much longer time.

This was an amazing growth experience for Bobby and as they watched the way he handled himself in the hospital, his parents were viewing him differently. With his fear removed, this little boy was realizing his own ability to assert himself, quietly and strongly.

His mother comments that she would love to see every parent in the world using EFT with their children. When, two weeks after the surgery, Bobby had to return once more to the emergency room because of a stomach virus that was complicating the final stage of his recovery (he bounced right back from this and is now fine), as he was watching the other children in the waiting room who were crying and screaming in fear and distress, his comment was, “I sure wish all these kids could have EFT!”

I think we all agree with Bobby.

Part 1 of 7: Introduction

Whenever we have been traumatized, hurt, betrayed or scared, our body records the feelings on an energetic and cellular level. As the well-known trauma specialist Bessel Van der Kolk says, “your body keeps the score.”

After this introduction to this article, parts 2 and 3 of this series will address stored trauma and conflict in the body from an energetic perspective. Parts 4 and 5 will address present manifestations of trauma in the skin and current diagnoses, and parts 6 and 7 will address our body’s responses to our future. (Please note that I am not a doctor, so I am only suggesting energetic ways to address the body with EFT as an adjunct to proper medical care.)

When we have a car accident, the bruises or broken bones are evident, physical, visible to the eye and painful when touched. When we cut ourselves with a knife or burn ourselves in the kitchen, the scars can last indefinitely—proof that yes, we endured yet made it through a hardship of some kind. But when we’ve been screamed at, abandoned, or threatened, we have no visible “scars” to see or show others. Our bodies do indeed make and keep excellent records of these incidents in our electricity and our energy fields.

Enter EFT…

EFT is my energy technique of choice to address all emotional conflicts and trauma at multiple levels – emotional, spiritual, physical, and electrical. So when you were reamed out by your coach, the “trauma” can’t just be talked out in traditional talk therapy without leaving an electrical trace. Impressions have been made beyond the rational processing of the mind, and when your friend or colleague says, “he was having a bad day” or “he does it to everyone” this doesn’t help erase the electrical impression that was made by the incident. If we seriously want to rewire ourselves, EFT is the tool.

Think of the positive reframe of the phrase, “rewiring” our brain. We don’t need a new brain, we don’t need to be fixed because we’re not broken. We have all the necessary parts, we just need to do some rewiring so the electrical impulses are firing in response to the right stimuli. We have all the ingredients now, we just need to make new connections, perceptions and interpretations.

EFT’s discovery statement says “The cause of all negative emotion is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” Let’s continue to clear those disruptions and embrace deep level healing that is available to us.

Let’s begin.

The first step is to develop rapport with your body in a genuine and loving way, as you might with a friend or new client coming for an appointment. Be kind, listen deeply, be open, and make time to communicate. Too many people ignore the messages from their body, or don’t even recognize that their bodies are communicating with them to begin with!

The following points help me approach my clients when they want to work on emotional underpinnings of physical issues. (Keep in mind, I am not a medical doctor, so I am not treating the illness, but the underlying emotional and vibrational conflicts that contribute to the illness.)

1. Pain Is a Signal: Pain is a brilliant, loud, information-rich signal. We need to hear it or we will risk the signal becoming amplified to get our attention. Pain is often an unconscious process. Conflicts are manifested through the body (soma) from emotional tension in the mind (psyche) which is why we develop psychosomatic illnesses. The illnesses or headaches are real, however, the origin is psychological conflict, not germs, viruses or bacterial causes.

2. Symbolic Clues: Often, the body has stored information in particular organs for symbolic reasons. Our bodies are far more brilliant than we ever give them credit for, and sometimes they try to get our attention in a humorous or obvious way. It’s not unusual for shoulder problems to be connected to experiences of carrying the weight of the world, legs, knees and feet being connected to moving forward, or skin issues reflecting deep irritations and issues bothering us “below the surface.”

3. Traumas and Conflicts Drain Our Immune Systems: As Gary Craig talks about in his serious disease DVDs, these repressed, suppressed, or avoided hurts, resentments and conflicts naturally siphon off energy and strength from our immune systems, making us available “targets” for illness or structural vulnerabilities. Peaceless, although high functioning, we eventually develop a physical challenge because we have no more psychic room in which to store it.

4. Cure vs Cause: It is my personal opinion that we spend way too much time looking for cures and ignoring the cause of our physiological ailments. Every illness has a vibration. We would spend less time and money and gain more health and vitality if we looked at the vibrations or causes of our problems and treated them with EFT. This does not mean we don’t need a doctor when we have a serious issue. It means throwing pills or surgery at our body will succeed, but only temporarily if we don’t address the underlying vibration.

I love asking myself or clients questions to stimulate energetic connections that may have gone unnoticed by the conscious mind. I also like “fill in the blank” statements such as the ones listed below. Make up your own, write quickly, and you may be surprised by what pops up for you. Below are some samples and favorites:

1. If my _____________ could talk, it would tell me that I have been neglecting _______________________________.

2. My sore ______________ represents the conflict I have over ___________ (or in this relationship.)

3. Romantic love conflicts and hurts seem to be stored in my ______________.

4. Money worries always seem to show up in my _______________.

5. Anger issues have traditionally caused me to develop pain or inflammation in my ______________________________.

6. Fears seem to manifest physically through my ________________.

7. When I feel underappreciated, my _______________ hurts.

8. When I’m threatened on the job and feel competitive, I tend to have tightness in my ________________________.

9. When I’m exhausted and overworked, I notice discomfort in my _____________.

10.When I encounter problems with my family, my ________________ always flares up.

Remember, I believe we would be far more efficient if we spent time and energy on the vibrational causes of the problem, (it’s core) rather than the cures (what happens afterwards) and then address this vibration with EFT, so that we can stay healthy longer! Problems are caused by vibrations, and we have the power to change our vibrations (which we do through thoughts and feelings), why not put more focus where we have more power?

Stay tuned for parts 2 and 3 of this series which will address storing trauma in the body.

Part 2 of 7: The Past – Holding Onto Traumatic Events

In part 2 of this series, I will be addressing ways to approach illness and pain that has been stored in the body from traumas from an energetic perspective. Please note, I am not a medical doctor, and am not in any way suggesting you do not seek appropriate medical care for physiological issues. I am offering an additional perspective and a powerful way to use EFT in combination with medical options.

We hold the memory of past events in our bodies as much as we do in our minds and our energy fields. Past events have a particular “vibration.” This is why they need to be cleared at all levels, and I have not yet found a technique more elegant and complete than EFT for this clearing process.

After you have seen your doctor and heard the diagnosis, does it make sense? Can you trace it to emotional contributors? What is your body trying to say? And more importantly, are you willing to listen?

We all have experienced mild to severe past traumas (actual events such as car accidents, falling, being hit, mugged, etc) or have been holding ongoing emotional conflicts that remain unresolved (these will be addressed in parts 4 and 5).

Pick a part of your body where you tend to have a vulnerability to stress. Maybe your tummy acts up over work stress, maybe your lower back bothers you when you’re having marital conflict, maybe your skin erupts when a problem is festering. Assume that your body has made connections for you. I invite you to be a detective to find out what you need to release in order to bring physical comfort back into your life. (Even remembering that it used to be there can change your vibration in the right direction.)

1. What “trauma” is in this body part and why is it trying to get your attention?

2. Have you been neglecting something?

3. Have you been ignoring making a commitment or a decision?

A client comes in complaining of severe back pain. She assumes it started after having a sports injury, but the MD found no concrete structural damage left after her medical treatment. There is no more treatment available other than rest, pain relievers, or a risky surgery that has a poor track record. You are not a doctor, so you are not licensed to treat the illness or injury, but you can start asking questions:

1. Did you ever have back pain before the sports injury?

2. Why do you think it is still going on after all these years?

3. Who or what is represented by this pain?

4. If there is no damage visible on the x-rays, what “information” about the injury/accident is still being stored in your back?

The pain was physical as well as emotional, but the wounds are still “active” even though the injury was years ago. What message might be in her back pain? What does she need to “hear” ? Try these setup phrases and tapping sequences as a guide.

Karate chop point: Even though I have been ignoring this message in my back, I choose to pay attention now…Even though I’m scared to listen to the message in my back, I am open and willing to listen now…Even though I know there’s something I need to hear from this pain, it’s not just about the injury, I accept that I was scared and that I am now open to the information.

EYEBROW: I feel scared of listening to the message.

SIDE OF EYE: I know my back has stored that trauma from 19__.

UNDER EYE: I feel so worried about bringing it up again.

NOSE: I know my back is trying to get my attention.

CHIN: I don’t want to “go there.”

COLLARBONE: My back is taking me there.

UNDER ARM: I can handle dealing with this trauma again.

HEAD: I want to know why my back is “talking” to me.

EYEBROW: I feel open to the information here.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m ready and willing to listen.

UNDER EYE: I’m scared but I know I can handle the information.

NOSE: I know what emotions I am storing, but I wanted to ignore them.

CHIN: No wonder my back is hurting.

COLLARBONE: I am willing to express and release the trauma.

UNDER ARM: I don’t need to store the pain anymore.

HEAD: I am free to give it up if I choose.

Allergies are rampant in our society. When the body has an allergy, it believes there is an outside force attacking, and it musters all its forces (the runny nose, watery eyes etc) to fight off the attacker. Suppose you looked at your life for other perceived or real “attacks” that may be manifesting in allergies. While you may use the fact that the pollen count is high as a way to legitimize your allergies, I encourage you to look for underlying emotional causes and conflicts. Do any other “attacks” come to mind?

Karate chop point: Even though I’m allergic to so many things, I choose to accept my body is trying to protect me…Even though the allergies remind me of an earlier attack, one I wanted to forget, I choose to accept my body’s response…Even though I remember what attack my body is truly responding to, I accept the allergies and accept my body’s response.

EYEBROW: I was attacked many years ago.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m still holding that fear in my body and allergies.

UNDER EYE: I had forgotten about that attack, but my body remembers.

NOSE: I have been fighting that attack with my allergies.

CHIN: It has been a long time and I’m willing to feel the pain.

COLLARBONE: I remember the attack as if it were yesterday.

UNDER ARM: I was so scared.

HEAD: No wonder my system wants to protect me.

EYEBROW: I am ready to release the need for protection.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m ready to protect myself now.

UNDER EYE: I am safer than I was back then.

NOSE: I choose to protect myself in new ways.

CHIN: I appreciate how my body was trying to take care of me.

COLLARBONE: I am ready to release the allergies.

UNDER ARM: I know why I needed them.

HEAD: I don’t need them anymore.

Take another physical “event” such as a car accident. Why is the pain still there after 20 years? Regardless of the original diagnosis, think of it in energetic terms. Why might you still be holding on to it?

It is very common to hold onto physical pain for emotional reasons. We all have done it, but it is possible to separate this tangle and move on with EFT.

I have had several clients who were involved in car accidents who were afraid to “let go” or forget the trauma of the accident. They believed the pain helped them stay vigilant on the road as it reminded them what could happen if they didn’t pay attention.

Karate chop point: Even though I’ve been holding on to the pain from this accident for too long, I’m afraid to give it up, I deeply and completely love and accept myself anyway…Even though the doctors said I would be in pain for the rest of my life, I’m willing to consider that I don’t need to be…Even though I’m holding onto this physical pain for emotional reasons, I accept who I am and how I feel about what happened.

EYEBROW: I am afraid to give up the pain, I don’t want anyone to forget what happened.

SIDE OF EYE: I was traumatized by the accident.

UNDER EYE: I need to remember and be careful.

NOSE: The accident was so overwhelming.

CHIN: I’ll never forget the accident, and neither will my body.

COLLARBONE: I don’t want to let it go.

UNDER ARM: It’s been with me so long

HEAD: I’m afraid of letting go of the pain even though I want to.

EYEBROW: I might be able to let it go now.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m listening to my body and I know what I need.

UNDER EYE: What if I could let some of it go?

NOSE: I don’t need to remember the pain.

CHIN: I’m willing to work through the trauma and fear.

COLLARBONE: I know my body is better now.

UNDER ARM: I don’t need to hold on any longer.

HEAD: I feel open to releasing this old pain from the accident.

In part 3 of this series, I will address several examples of emotional traumas from your past that may be stored in body parts: “The Past – Storing Bad News.”

Stay tuned,

Carol Look, EFT Master

Part 3 of 7: The Past – Storing Bad News

In part 3 of this series, I will address numerous examples of how past emotional conflict and “bad news” may be stored in your body, ailments, aches and pains.

Let’s begin with emotional traumas that don’t involve, cuts, scrapes, bruises or any other obvious physical problem. Suppose you felt abandoned by your parents when they divorced. They were so involved in their fighting, they left the kids alone and without resources to talk through the fear and sadness. Maybe you were pre-adolescent, not quite angry yet, and the shock of the news of your parents’ divorce was never “aired” with them, a counselor or your peers. (This is extremely common.)

Do you remember where you were when you heard this news?

Do you remember what you were wearing, what the temperature was, whether you were sitting or standing?

Where was the news stored in your body? (If there isn’t a clear answer, just guess…)

What conclusions about yourself and life (It’s not safe to love…) did you make as a result?

Clients will often use phrases such as:

“I felt like I was punched in the stomach when I heard that.”

“It hit me like a ton of bricks.”

“It really threw me for a loop.”

How’s your stomach now?

Where did the ton of bricks land?

What was the effect of being thrown for a loop?

Our bodies are storage places for verbal, emotional, and spiritual betrayals. This is why we need to clear our energy system of leftover conflicts. It is more than probable that many people aren’t even aware of how particular shocks were stored, how bad news has been held, or how old wounds were covered up instead of being healed.

As I mentioned earlier, it should come as no surprise that the ailments and complaints of adults can be symbolically traced to an early emotional pain or conflict. Suppose you were stunned to hear that you were betrayed, and lost the support of a trusted friend, mentor or boss. One convenient place to store this information and trauma is in your knees and legs….symbolically representing “feeling supported” etc. (If this following example doesn’t resonate for you, choose your own, and fill in your own words.)

Karate chop point: Even though the bad news has apparently been stored in my knees, I choose to release it now…Even though I didn’t know where else to store the bad news, I accept who I am and how I feel about it…Even though I’ve been keeping this bad news in my body, I choose to release it now.

EYEBROW: I don’t want to remember this bad news.

SIDE OF EYE: I know I’ve been storing it in my legs.

UNDER EYE: I feel protective of this bad news.

NOSE: I didn’t feel supported.

CHIN: I don’t want to open up these old hurts.

COLLARBONE: I feel hurt from the bad news.

UNDER ARM: I still feel shocked and frozen.

HEAD: I have been storing the bad news in my legs for years.

EYEBROW: I’m not ready to let it go.

SIDE OF EYE: Maybe I am.

UNDER EYE: I don’t want to remember the bad news.

NOSE: I might be able to let this go from my legs.

CHIN: It was a long time ago.

COLLARBONE: It’s time to be free of this burden.

UNDER ARM: I’m willing to let some of it go from my legs.

HEAD: I don’t need to hold it in my body anymore.

Bad news is often a shock to us and of course, therefore, to all the cells in our bodies. Telephone calls often deliver bad news of an accident, a death, results of a medical test, or a major life change. Think of a phone call you received that was a shock to you (or your client.)

Where is the shock of this news stored for you?

Did time stop for you back then?

What physical problems have you encountered since then?

Have you ever been able to let it go?

Karate chop point: Even though this information came as a shock to me, and I’ve been storing it in my neck, I accept who I am and what I did with it…Even though I didn’t see it coming, I accept where I chose to bury this information…Even though I wasn’t prepared to hear the bad news, and it lodged in my neck, I accept who I am, where I put it, and how I feel about it now.

EYEBROW: I still remember how I felt when I heard it.

SIDE OF EYE: I froze up inside.

UNDER EYE: I feel so sad when I remember the phone call.

NOSE: I remember being so shocked, and a part of me still feels shocked.

CHIN: No wonder I have a stiff neck.

COLLARBONE: I was caught off guard and didn’t know what to do.

UNDER ARM: I’ve been holding onto the shock and fear in my neck.

HEAD: I didn’t know what to do with the information.

EYEBROW: I am considering releasing the shock from my neck.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m willing to let go of some of the emotional trauma.

UNDER EYE: I WAS caught off guard, and that’s ok.

NOSE: I didn’t see it coming, how could I?

CHIN: It’s ok to let my guard down again.

COLLARBONE: I didn’t know what to do, but now I can let go.

UNDER ARM: I choose to release the shock from my neck and body.

HEAD: I feel relieved already as I release these feelings from my neck.

Suppose you were suddenly fired from your job or your marriage … and didn’t see it coming. Where did you “put” that information (bad news) while you tried to compose yourself? Many people are completely caught off guard when their spouse or partner announces that they are leaving. They berate themselves for not seeing the warning signs, and assume that they “aren’t good enough.” These conclusions along with the shock of the “news” gets stored in the body.

Karate chop point: Even though this came as a total surprise, and I’ll never forget it, I accept who I am and how I feel about it…Even though I blame myself for being left, I accept who I am and what I did with the information…Even though it’s my fault, I deserved it, I am still in shock and don’t know what to do about it.

EYEBROW: I still feel the shock in my back.

SIDE OF EYE: I know I’ve stored it in my back.

UNDER EYE: I feel so sore about the bad news.

NOSE: My back has never been the same.

CHIN: I can feel the pain of the abandonment in my back.

COLLARBONE: I have been storing this pain in my back.

UNDER ARM: I don’t want to let it go.

HEAD: I’m still so angry.

EYEBROW: I feel shocked even after all these years.

SIDE OF EYE: I couldn’t control what happened.

UNDER EYE: I feel so helpless even now.

NOSE: Why didn’t I see it coming?

CHIN: I feel angry about being told in this way.

COLLARBONE: I wish he/she had handled it differently.

UNDER ARM: I don’t know how to process the bad news.

HEAD: I have been holding onto the shock for all these years.

When in doubt, add some positive rounds to help the person accept what happened and consider moving on.

EYEBROW: I am ready to work through this conflict.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m willing to consider that it wasn’t all my fault.

UNDER EYE: What if it was all for the best anyway?

NOSE: I’m not ready to let go.

CHIN: I still feel hurt and abandoned.

COLLARBONE: I don’t know how to release the pain in my back.

UNDER ARM: I’m willing to relax and accept myself.

HEAD: I feel almost ready to accept who I am and how I dealt with the bad news back then.

EYEBROW: I appreciate my back and who I am.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m ok with how I stored the information in my back.

UNDER EYE: I did the best I could back then.

NOSE: I’m still doing the best I can.

CHIN: I appreciate my body.

COLLARBONE: I’m grateful to my body for protecting me.

UNDER ARM: I appreciate my body.

HEAD: I feel good about letting go of some of this pain.

Stay tuned for part 4 of this series, “The Present – What’s Under Your Skin?”

Carol Look, EFT Master

Part 4 of 7: The Present – What’s Under Your Skin?

In part 4 of this series, I want to address issues that manifest through our skin, the largest organ in our body. For the purpose of these illustrations, I will assume that the irritations are from current life stressors, not from past traumas as illustrated in parts 2 and 3.

People, places, and situations get under our skin, and when we feel irritated, it shows on our face or bodies. Our skin is in touch with both our inside world and our outside world, as it and absorbs all the information from our environment. I believe it would do us a great service to pay attention to what our skin is communicating to us through eruptions, ailments, conditions etc. When we feel overloaded, and our feelings aren’t being expressed and heard, they tend to spill into our bodies…our skin is a perfect place to express our conflicts, stress and feelings of being overwhelmed. It is not surprising to hear someone say “My skin is acting up since that job change…” or “He is so under my skin these days…” or “He’s like a bad rash…”

Suppose you or your client has been given some kind of diagnosis about skin inflammation, and the MDs have done all they can do to offer medical remedies. The next step is to explore what might be causing this in your current situation:

If your inflamed skin reminded you of someone, who would it be?

If the inflammation had a name, what would it be?

Who or what is causing you to feel itchy?

If the dry itchy patches had a message, what would it be?

If your skin rashes were trying to get your attention, what do you need to focus on?

If you could trace the “eruptions” with a current stressor in your life, where would you end up?

If your skin represented “you” and what you need, then what do “you” need right now?

If our skin is showing conflict, find out why where and who is being expressed through irritations, rashes, and itching!

Karate chop point: Even though he really got under my skin this time, I accept who I am and appreciate my feelings…Even though I’m afraid to admit how strongly I feel about this issue, I accept myself and my feelings about what happened…Even though I let this problem get under my skin, I choose to release this irritation.

EYEBROW: I feel so irritated by this situation.

SIDE OF EYE: I let him get under my skin.

UNDER EYE: I have many issues underneath the surface.

NOSE: I’m afraid to go beneath the surface.

CHIN: I don’t want to look at what might be causing these “eruptions.”

COLLARBONE: He/she is so under my skin!

UNDER ARM: I’m holding onto this irritation in my skin

HEAD: I don’t want to let go yet.

EYEBROW: I will consider releasing this conflict in my skin.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m almost ready to let it go.

UNDER EYE: Part of me really wants to let it go.

NOSE: The other part of me wants to hold on to it.

CHIN: He/She really got under my skin this time.

COLLARBONE: I’m so irritated by what happened.

UNDER ARM: I don’t need to hold it in my skin anymore.

HEAD: I feel ready to release some of this conflict and soothe my skin.

I also find it incredibly productive to use a few rounds expressing gratitude for your body. It reminds us how strong we really are, and allows us to temporarily focus on something positive, in spite of the problem.

EYEBROW: I’m so grateful for my skin.

SIDE OF EYE: I appreciate my skin.

UNDER EYE: I love how flexible my skin has always been.

NOSE: I appreciate all of my skin.

CHIN: I’m grateful for what my skin has done for me.

COLLARBONE: I appreciate my skin.

UNDER ARM: I’m grateful for all of me.

HEAD: I feel so grateful for my skin and my body.

And if the skin problems seem to be caused by overwhelmed feelings and stress in general, I would try something along the lines of the following setups and phrasing.

Karate chop point: Even though the stress from my job is coming out in my skin, I choose to express my feelings and take care of myself…Even though the stress from my work and family is spilling over into my skin, I accept who I am and how I feel….Even though I can’t handle the stress so it’s irritating my skin, I accept who I am and how I feel about my life.

EYEBROW: I feel so stressed out.

SIDE OF EYE: I know the stress is coming out in my skin.

UNDER EYE: I feel so exhausted and stressed from my life.

NOSE: I have so many feelings inside that need to come out.

CHIN: I have so much stress in my current environment.

COLLARBONE: I want to relax and soothe my skin.

UNDER ARM: My poor skin can’t take any more stress.

HEAD: I just want to feel calm and soothed.

EYEBROW: I know I’m expressing my feelings through my skin.

SIDE OF EYE: My entire family expresses feelings through their skin.

UNDER EYE: I don’t want to express these scary feelings.

NOSE: I’m afraid to express these strong feelings to anyone else.

CHIN: I am so itchy about all of this.

COLLARBONE: I feel so irritated.

UNDER ARM: There’s no place else for it to go.

HEAD: I feel so itchy about these issues.

I would always end with a positive round to give the person some options about soothing their skin.

EYEBROW: I know I have other outlets besides my skin.

SIDE OF EYE: I choose to express myself clearly.

UNDER EYE: I appreciate my feelings and will allow them to come out.

NOSE: I’m accepting of who I am and how I feel.

CHIN: I understand why my skin is full of conflict.

COLLARBONE: I feel less irritated already.

UNDER ARM: I can finally let go of some of this inflammation.

HEAD: I no longer feel itchy about these issues.

The above examples are a good start. Do your own homework about the places in your body you store your conflicts, and keep tapping.

Stay tuned for part 5 of this series “The Present – It’s Not About the Germs.”

Carol Look, EFT Master

Part 5 of 7: The Present…It’s Not About the Germs

Again, since I have already addressed past traumas and betrayals showing up in ailments in parts 2 and 3 of this series, I will assume that current stressors are contributing to the aches and pains of our daily life for the purpose of part 5 of this series. While there are always past stresses, let’s focus on your present life.

We are all exposed to germs and bacteria every day. I have clients coming into my office coughing and spewing all over the place, I ride the New York City subway system, and I work in an apartment building. So why would I catch a cold or get the flu on a random Tuesday? What happened this time to make me a “favorable host” to the germs?

Our immune systems are incredibly strong and even adaptable. However, they can take just “so much” before slowing down or fighting infection inadequately. The only time I catch the colds, despite how many I am exposed to, are when I am stressed out, tired, upset, or not feeling supported in my life. Clearly, it’s not about the germs…

Suppose you feel a cold coming on, but it hasn’t quite taken hold yet. While it may be too late to “stop” it, I find it useful to explore the timing.

What’s been bothering you recently to upset you?

What do you need to cry about?

What has been overwhelming you recently?

Why now?

What’s the upside of getting the cold/flu this week?

As we all know, some illnesses “allow” us to take a break when we don’t take enough “time out.” This goes back to the theory of self-care…if you don’t take good care of yourself, your body will start screaming out loud to get your attention. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t seen this pattern in their life at one time or another.

Karate chop point: Even though I’m ignoring something I need to address, I accept that my body is feeling run down…Even though this virus is trying to tell me something, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though the flu is expressing something for me, I choose to be open to expressing my feelings now.

EYEBROW: I feel weak and run down.

SIDE OF EYE: I feel this cold coming on.

UNDER EYE: I feel so tired I just want a break.

NOSE: I don’t know why I’m getting sick now.

CHIN: Maybe I’m just overtired.

COLLARBONE: I need to rest my body.

UNDER ARM: I wonder why I got this illness right now.

HEAD: I don’t want to be sick right now.

EYEBROW: I choose to express my feelings.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m going to listen to my body right now.

UNDER EYE: I’m willing to listen to my symptoms.

NOSE: I know I’ve been ignoring my health.

CHIN: It’s time to listen to my body.

COLLARBONE: It’s time to take care of my health.

UNDER ARM: I choose to appreciate who I am.

HEAD: I feel ready to hear what my body is trying to say.

And if you keep feeling susceptible to germs, colds and the flu, keep tapping away at your fears of being “infected.” From a medical perspective, most doctors will be exploring the germs. I’m not a doctor, so I am exploring the energetic causes and vibrations around illness. I have seen enough patterns to believe it’s not about the germs, it’s about you and your vibration…

Karate chop point: Even though I’m afraid to get sick again, I choose to feel strong and happy in my body…Even though I’m convinced the germs will get to me, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though I’m feeling susceptible to germs, I accept who I am and how strong my body is.

EYEBROW: I feel vulnerable to germs.

SIDE OF EYE: I’ve always been afraid of getting sick.

UNDER EYE: I’ve always been afraid of germs.

NOSE: I don’t want to get sick.

CHIN: I think about it all the time.

COLLARBONE: I don’t want to be so fearful.

UNDER ARM: I feel so weak.

HEAD: I think I have a weak immune system.

EYEBROW: I want to feel strong.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m ready to get over these fears.

UNDER EYE: I choose to feel strong.

NOSE: I AM stronger than I think.

CHIN: It’s time to feel strong again.

COLLARBONE: My body knows what to do.

UNDER ARM: My body knows how to be healthy.

HEAD: I feel ready to be strong and healthy now.

Again, let’s look at timing. In this case, we won’t deal with germs, but with a chronic condition that flares up when you are out of sorts. Suppose your back “goes out” approximately every 6 months and you have experienced this pattern for years. The doctors tell you there’s nothing to do about it.

Why now?

Why this week?

Is the feedback from your back worth listening to?

What needs to change?

What is your back wanting from you?

Karate chop point: Even though I just couldn’t take it any more and needed a break, I choose to love and accept who I am and how I feel…Even though I couldn’t take the stress in my life anymore, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though I’m holding the stress in my back, no wonder it acted up this week, I accept who I am and choose to listen to my feelings.

EYEBROW: I feel so overwhelmed.

SIDE OF EYE: I don’t know why my back went “out.”

UNDER EYE: I feel so stressed out and can’t get a break.

NOSE: I need rest.

CHIN: I don’t know how to take time for myself.

COLLARBONE: I don’t know how to give myself what I need.

UNDER ARM: I don’t even know what I need right now.

HEAD: I’m grateful for the quiet time and rest.

EYEBROW: I am willing to listen to my back.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m willing to pay attention to my feelings.

UNDER EYE: I’m not sure why my back went out “now…”

NOSE: I am willing to be open to the information.

CHIN: It’s time to make some changes.

COLLARBONE: I don’t even know what to change.

UNDER ARM: I want to change because my life’s not working.

HEAD: I feel ready for a change.

When someone has to stay in bed with an illness or pain, it provides time for reflection. I always make good use of the time! What do I need to change? Something isn’t working, and I try and pay attention to the recent conflicts about balancing life, love, work and family. Again, add a round expressing gratitude to your body for how strong it is.

EYEBROW: I totally appreciate my back.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m grateful for the strength of my back.

UNDER EYE: My back has carried me all these years.

NOSE: I am so grateful for my back.

CHIN: I appreciate the strength in my back.

COLLARBONE: I feel deep gratitude for my back.

UNDER ARM: I appreciate my whole body.

HEAD: I appreciate my back and my body.

Stay tuned for part 6 of this series, “The Future — Anxiety About My Life.”

Carol Look, EFT Master

Part 6 of 7: The Future — Anxiety About My Life

A great deal of energy is spent worrying about our future that hasn’t arrived yet. We live with chronic anxiety which of course drains our immune systems and may set us up to be vulnerable to stress-related illnesses.

These worries take energy. These worries are “expensive” to our health. However, tell someone with chronic anxiety that they should stop worrying, and they have no idea what you are talking about, much less how to accomplish this!

I recommend that anyone who finds him/herself “in the future” a great deal of the time, do regular tapping sessions about their fears and anticipatory anxiety, and watch and enjoy an overall peace come into their daily life.

Suppose you are worried about your job, possible promotions, whether you’re “cutting it” or not. Worry keeps you up at night, causes you to feel exhausted and to be irritable with your spouse and kids. Sooner or later, you develop a pain, an irritation, an annoying problem with your health that gets diagnosed as a “stress condition.” This is a typical cycle with chronic anxiety. Then the diagnosed ailments or undiagnosed pains are cause for more worry.

Imagine trading some of the current and chronic worrisome thoughts with more peaceful, gentle thoughts about your life. Maybe you could even reduce the amount of time you worry about your future. The gift of EFT for people who suffer from chronic anxiety is nothing short of astonishing. Chronic anxiety underlies numerous health issues and sleep irregularities, so regular intervals of tapping is a must for my anxious clients.

Common symptoms of chronic anxiety are stomach problems, overall digestive complications, skin irritations, insomnia, heart irregularities, internal thermostat problems etc.

Where does your worry “live” in your body?

What physical “conditions” do you suspect may be a direct result of your anxiety?

If you didn’t obsess/worry about your future, what would you be focused on?

What resources are your worries draining from your body/mind?

Who will you be if you aren’t a worrier?

Who will do the family worrying if you don’t?

Below, I will illustrate EFT setup phrases and tapping sequences for digestive problems, as they are so common in our culture. Before overdosing on those over the counter remedies for indigestion and gas, I recommend studying the answers to the above questions as well as examining your eating habits and their relationship to stress and anxiety.

Do you watch stressful television shows or news while you eat?

Do you tend to have arguments at the dinner table?

Is there tension present in the kitchen in your home?

Is there a key past event that happened during a holiday meal?

Do you talk about unpleasant subjects during meals?

It’s wise to keep these questions in mind and watch what happens during your meals. Many people don’t even realize how much stress they have in their life while they are trying to eat and digest.

Karate chop point: Even though I keep worrying about the future, and it unsettles my digestion, I accept who I am right now…Even though I know my stomach is torn by the worries I have, I accept who I am and how I feel anyway…Even though my anxiety is showing up in my stomach problems, I deeply and completely love and accept who I am.

EYEBROW: My worries go right to my gut.

SIDE OF EYE: I can feel the anxiety inside.

UNDER EYE: I feel so worried and my stomach knows something’s wrong.

NOSE: I feel the worries in my gut.

CHIN: I am worried all the time.

COLLARBONE: I know I need to feel more peaceful.

UNDER ARM: I feel out of control with my worries.

HEAD: I should give my stomach a rest.

EYEBROW: I will consider releasing my anxiety from my stomach.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m willing to let go of some of this stomach upset.

UNDER EYE: I want to be free of this worry.

NOSE: I choose to be free of this anxiety about my future.

CHIN: I want to release the future right now.

COLLARBONE: I want to stay in the present instead.

UNDER ARM: I accept who I am and how I’m feeling.

HEAD: I feel better already.

EYEBROW: What if I could relax my gut.

SIDE OF EYE: I want to relax my gut.

UNDER EYE: I choose to be free of my future worries.

NOSE: I choose to relax my gut right now.

CHIN: I feel free about releasing my anxiety.

COLLARBONE: I choose to stay in the present instead.

UNDER ARM: I accept my feelings and release and relax.

HEAD: I choose to relax about my future.

The challenge is that the behavior and habit of worrying provides a certain security for chronic worriers. When they are fussing about others or themselves, they feel better than when they aren’t worrying. Part of it is habitual, but the other part is what we call “magical thinking.” They believe that if they worry sufficiently about others, they can magically “control” certain circumstances. At the very least, they don’t have to suffer being caught “off guard” about what might happen. I think it’s essential to give worriers the OPTION to keep worrying. If you take away their “job” they will feel utterly empty, at least in the beginning. Remember, we need to feel safe with the changes from EFT, or we will revert back to our old behavior.

Karate chop point: Even though I’m reluctant to let go of my worrying, I choose to feel calm about my life anyway…Even though I’m not ready to let go of my worrying, because I still think it’s useful, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though I don’t want to give it up yet, it doesn’t feel right, I accept who I am and how I feel.

EYEBROW: I feel reluctant to let go of my worrying.

SIDE OF EYE: Don’t make me give it up.

UNDER EYE: Who will I be without my anxiety?

NOSE: How will I feel in control without my anxiety?

CHIN: Who will worry if I don’t?

COLLARBONE: I’m not ready to let it go from my stomach.

UNDER ARM: Don’t ask me to let it go yet.

HEAD: I’m not ready to let it go.

EYEBROW: I refuse to let go of my worrying.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m not ready to feel free yet.

UNDER EYE: I don’t know who I’ll be without it.

NOSE: I don’t want to give it up.

CHIN: It helps me in so many ways.

COLLARBONE: I won’t give it up yet.

UNDER ARM: I refuse to stop being anxious.

HEAD: I feel scared about giving it up.

Once you give them permission to continue worrying, then their “stance” loosens a bit and they become able to release a small part of the behavior. Remember, worriers have used their habit for years, sometimes decades, so to “remove it” with EFT will not feel safe. Once you’ve done a few rounds on allowing them to “refuse” to let it go, and admit they’re not ready to release it, then you have room to make some alternative suggestions. You also allow their bodies to reduce the chronic tension and stop the cycle of pumping stress hormones through their systems.

EYEBROW: I will consider letting some of my anxiety from my stomach.

SIDE OF EYE: Maybe it’s not as useful as I thought.

UNDER EYE: I wonder what it’s doing to my health and my digestion?

NOSE: I still don’t want to give it up.

CHIN: It helps me in so many ways.

COLLARBONE: Maybe I don’t need it anymore.

UNDER ARM: Maybe it’s time to consider relaxing my digestion.

HEAD: I still feel apprehensive about letting it go.

When in doubt, even if there are no physical symptoms present in the body, worrying is a huge stress on the body. I recommend using EFT for regular health maintenance and self-care, so you have as much energy available to you to live your life with peace.

Stay tuned for part 7 of this series, “The Future…Fear of Their Reactions.”

Carol Look, EFT Master

Part 7 of 7: The Future…Fear of Their Reactions

Many people spend time worrying about “their reactions.” This subject always interferes with people being free to attract abundance. It’s not that we don’t want the success or happiness we keep talking about, it’s that we fear what “they” will say, or how “they” will react in response to our success. While these may seem like obvious fears we all have about making changes in our lives, they actually represent deeper limiting beliefs and I believe they cause quite a drain on the immune system.

Sometimes people sabotage themselves with an illness in order to appease someone in their life who might be jealous of their success. Sometimes people regain the weight they worked so hard to lose or start smoking again in order to make others feel more comfortable. Other times clients suddenly get sick in order to slow down their success – this has the effect of warding off negative reactions from family members or colleagues.

If you have put aside time to talk to your body, you will be able to “hear” the answers to some important questions. All fear gets lodged in our bodies somewhere. In fact, I think all feelings of every kind cause changes and shifts in our chemical make up.

For instance, say these limiting beliefs out loud…

I’m convinced if I become successful, they will leave me.

I know that if I’m not perfect, they won’t love me.

If I stand out again, they will try and hurt me.

If I’m too successful, I won’t be able to trust anyone.

If I get that job, they will hurt me with their jealousy.

Do any of these statements ring true to you? Check your gut for the true “charge” you have on these limiting beliefs.

Now read the list of statements again and locate where they surface in your body. Does the statement of trust land in your gut? Does the jealousy issue get stuck in your throat? Where does the statement about being perfect get stored in your body?

Another critical question to ask yourself and your clients is “What happened the last time you were successful?” There was usually a negative consequence (or perceived problem) that occurred the last time someone was “successful.” This event needs to be cleared from your energy system and body, or you will sabotage your success in hundreds of ways to remain “safe” from this happening again.

A singer was teased and mocked by her classmates for landing the biggest part in the school play. They didn’t think it was “cool” and were probably jealous as well. Ever since that time in junior high school, she has suffered throat problems. This of course is no surprise to an outsider, but she never made the emotional and energetic connection with why her vulnerable point in her body was her throat. Every time she got sick, the illness was connected to her throat in some way. She didn’t realize how expressing herself through singing had caused a conflict for her.

Karate chop point: Even though they ridiculed me for standing out, I choose to voice my feelings once and for all…Even thought their teasing me really hurt, and I let it stay in my throat, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though they teased me and it stayed in my throat all these years, I accept who I am and how I feel about it.

EYEBROW: I don’t feel free to express my feelings.

SIDE OF EYE: The hurt got caught in my throat.

UNDER EYE: I feel so hurt about their nasty comments.

NOSE: I wanted to sing and sing freely.

CHIN: I thought it was a good thing to express my voice.

COLLARBONE: My throat is so vulnerable.

UNDER ARM: I’m tired of getting a sore throat.

HEAD: I want to feel free and express what I feel.

EYEBROW: I deserve a voice.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m ready to voice my feelings.

UNDER EYE: I couldn’t tell them I was hurt back then.

NOSE: I couldn’t express my feelings back then.

CHIN: It still hurts sometimes in my throat.

COLLARBONE: I just want to scream and sing and shout my feelings.

UNDER ARM: Why can’t I sing?

HEAD: What’s the matter with my throat?

The throat always represents our ability to communicate, so there were many layers of tapping for this client. Once she cleared the original trauma stored in her throat, she could work on the fear that “they” would ridicule her again in the future.

A business man was the target of nasty gossip after he was promoted over a more senior employee. What did this leave for him in terms of energy and fear? Every time he got close to being promoted again, he sabotaged his success. When I asked him “What happened the last time you were successful?” he was able to identify this painful time in the office, and made the energetic connection to his sabotage behavior. In his case, he sabotaged himself by suddenly “putting his back out” and needing to stay at home in bed. Doctor’s orders were to stay in bed, so this was “legitimate” reason to stay away from work. This always happened around deadlines for critical projects at work, and the boss of course could no longer rely on him.

Karate chop point: Even though I’m afraid to be successful because of what they might say this time, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though I’m afraid to be successful again, I remember what happened last time, I accept my feelings and who I am…Even though I’m afraid to be successful again, they won’t like it, I accept and appreciate who I am and how I feel.

EYEBROW: I feel afraid of being successful again.

SIDE OF EYE: Don’t you remember what happened last time?

UNDER EYE: I feel so afraid of standing out.

NOSE: I don’t want them to be mean to me.

CHIN: I don’t want to stand out again.

COLLARBONE: I remember what happened last time.

UNDER ARM: I am afraid of being seen as successful.

HEAD: I don’t want to shine again.

EYEBROW: I’m storing this fear in my back.

SIDE OF EYE: My back feels so vulnerable.

UNDER EYE: I’ve never felt very supported by my colleagues.

NOSE: I don’t want them to be mean to me again.

CHIN: I don’t want to stand out again.

COLLARBONE: I remember what happened last time.

UNDER ARM: I am afraid of being seen as successful.

HEAD: I don’t want to shine again, so I take it out on my back.

EYEBROW: I am willing to release that pain.

SIDE OF EYE: I’m going to release the hurt from that experience.

UNDER EYE: Their feelings were about them.

NOSE: I choose to be successful again and enjoy it.

CHIN: I want to be successful and feel strong in my body.

COLLARBONE: I already am successful.

UNDER ARM: I don’t need to hide any more.

HEAD: I feel free and ready to move forward.

Again, the process of clearing has several steps. First, clear the original incident or event, then clear the fear of “it” happening again in the future, and finally, clear the symptoms in the body.

A client of mine couldn’t figure out why he kept sabotaging himself in his self-employed business. He had the talent, had the contacts, but could never close the “sale.” His income was steady, but through enormous ups and downs in the economy over two decades, he had never advanced. Clearly he had a comfort zone, but didn’t know why. When I asked him “What happened the last time you were really successful…” he figured out what his blocks were. Years ago, around the time he became super successful, an important family member died, and he felt ashamed of even caring about being successful.

Of course these two incidents weren’t related, (no one died because of his success) but he had linked them in his brain and memory. Remember we’re not talking about logical sense, we are talking about emotional connections, energy, and associations. His unconscious conclusion was: a good thing happens…a bad thing must follow. He had developed a pattern of needing to sabotage himself to stay level. He used the excuse of being “too tired” to work. He was constantly talking about a lack of energy, weakness, fatigue, and exhaustion, although the doctors had checked him out completely and found nothing wrong with him.

This man certainly had the skills and the knowledge to advance considerably financially and professionally. Sabotaging his success because he was “too tired” kept him in control because at least he was the one stopping himself. He had felt very out of control when his family member died, and made an internal vow never to go beyond a certain comfort zone again. Once he discovered this link, he could use EFT to clear it and stop needing to sabotage his success.

Karate chop point: Even though I’m afraid to be successful again because of what happened, I choose to accept my feelings and who I am…Even though I keep sabotaging myself because I’m afraid something bad will happen, I accept who I am and how I feel…Even though I am convinced something bad will happen if I become successful again, I deeply and profoundly accept myself anyway.

EYEBROW: I feel afraid to become successful.

SIDE OF EYE: I remember what happened last time.

UNDER EYE: I feel certain these events are connected.

NOSE: It doesn’t feel safe to succeed again.

CHIN: I want to stay safe and protect my family.

COLLARBONE: I’m afraid of becoming successful.

UNDER ARM: I don’t want something bad to happen again.

HEAD: I’m worried and I feel guilty about my success.

EYEBROW: I still feel guilty about my success.

SIDE OF EYE: My life was going so well.

UNDER EYE: I still feel guilty for caring about success.

NOSE: I don’t want something bad to happen again.

CHIN: I feel so tired all the time

COLLARBONE: It wasn’t fair.

UNDER ARM: It was my fault.

HEAD: No it wasn’t my fault.

If any of these stories resonate for you, continue tapping along with the suggested sequences and then make up your own to better fit your situation.

I hope this series about having a “Conversation with Your Body” was useful. Remember, we all store feelings and conflicts somewhere in our body, so make time to listen and hear yourself and your body’s needs. Our immune systems need care, our feelings need airtime, and our bodies need rest and relaxation from the stress of the past, the present and the future.

Brenda Shoshanna’s brother was very reluctant to use EFT, but did so anyway. To his astonishment, his frozen shoulder gained complete relief.
Here is an amazing and totally unexpected (by me) EFT result. I was introduced to EFT several months ago, and have been progressively tapping and studying your wonderful DVDs. Though I’ve been trying to do some surrogate tapping, I’d never directly tried EFT on another person.

However, one day, my brother came early to an open house I was hosting. He’d had a painful, frozen shoulder for about 4 months and over this time was constantly telling me how hard it was to lift it at all, how much it hurt and that it was interfering with his sleep at night, waking him in pain. He had done some exercises for it, suggested by a physical therapist, but those exercises only made the condition worse.

My brother knew nothing at all about EFT, except that I had learned about a fascinating technique that was helping me, and I’d been tapping. He didn’t really want to hear more about it, as he is usually quite resistant to these kinds of teachings. However, I had a very strong impulse to have him tap on his frozen arm, as he seemed so uncomfortable. I said, “Why not try it just for a little while. There’s nothing you can lose, except possibly some of the pain? There are absolutely no negative side effects.” As he had been in so much pain for so long, he reluctantly agreed.

I showed him the points to tap and which fingers to tap with. We started tapping on Even though my arm hurts… After a few rounds of tapping, he began to notice the pain decreasing. Excited, he was willing to do more. We then tapped on, Even though a part of me is blocked and frozen … and I accept the blocked and frozen parts. His face lit up in a huge smile. Right before our eyes, the arm was moving. He looked shocked. Frankly, I was too. It was going way up. Before, he could only barely lift it.

We kept going. This was exciting. He still couldn’t move it completely to the right or left. We tapped on Even though my movement is still constricted, I deeply and completely love and accept myself and accept my arm. He started laughing. I did too. This was fun. This was thrilling. His arm started moving to the left now.

He had a moment of fear, saying he was afraid he was cheating, having the pain leave so quickly. We then tapped on, Even though I feel I deserve to be in pain, and have to suffer for a long time … but I am willing to let this go.

We did this tapping over and over again. In about fifteen minutes total, his arm was completely fine. No pain, a tiny bit of stiffness, (which left a few minutes later), and full movement. Both of us were shocked and thrilled. He didn’t know what to make of it. I didn’t need to make anything of it. I just felt deep gratitude.

Guests arrived at the party and we told them what had happened. In a little while lots of people started tapping, and I put on one of Gary’s DVD’s to show everyone what it was about. There was a lot of spontaneous interest and fascination. What a way to start the new year!

My brother’s arm has not hurt again, nor has the movement been restricted. In fact, he said he just forgot about what it was like for it to be frozen. He’s fine. No follow up needed.

Thank you so much for this amazing method. I use it much more now, spend more time with the DVDs and am sharing it more and more with others, and hope to learn how to do the surrogate tapping more effectively.

Actually, when I’m now involved with someone who is hurting, I don’t feel I have the right not to share this.
