If you have a frozen shoulder diagnosed by your physician and have done any research on this condition, then you are aware of the 3 stages by now: Stage 1 – Increasing pain in the shoulder joint with daily activities or range of motion, Stage 2 – Increasing stiffness and loss of motion, but usually less pain, and Stage 3 – Shoulder range of motion beginning to increase slowly with return of functional abilities. Hopefully if you have begun a frozen shoulder exercise program then you are experiencing results. But what if you are not?

If your progress is less than desired then you might add these tips to boost your results:

Try a very warm shower, or even better a very warm bath just prior to beginning your exercise. The moist heat will increase local blood flow and extensibility (stretchiness) of the tissues in and around the shoulder joint.

Start with good posture before beginning each exercise. If you look in the mirror and your natural relaxed posture reveals rounded shoulders and upper back and your chin is protruding forward, this will lessen the amount of motion you will be able to obtain. Retract your chin slightly, sit up tall or stand tall, and roll your shoulders backwards before beginning any range of motion exercise. By doing this you place your affected shoulder in a more natural position and will make the frozen shoulder exercise more effective.

Increase your frequency and intensity of each exercise session. You should be stretching and strengthening several times a day, but each session should be more brief with focused intensity rather than 2-3 long drawn out sessions. You will see quicker results by not allowing the shoulder to stiffen up between sessions that are too far apart.

The tips above will boost the effectiveness of your frozen shoulder treatment and increase your motivation as you will see results sooner. Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program and make sure your program is designed by a professional or licensed clinician.

In order to cure shoulder pain, a frozen shoulder treatment must always include precise exercises to help revive mobility and range of motion effectively and swiftly.

As the condition advances, range of motion becomes more limited, particularly over head. Manipulation is the breaking of the adhesions performed by a surgeon under general anesthesia, while real surgery is only obligatory in the most dreadful cases and is typically avoidable. Both should be followed by a particular rehab program to cure shoulder pain.

Sadly , like all shoulder conditions, Adhesive Capsulitis can take many months or perhaps few years to regress naturally IF it’s not treated quickly and properly, as it develops in three long phases:.

* A Freezing Phase lasting three to six weeks, when movements are still possible but discomfort is at its highest.

* An ice-cold Phase lasting one year or longer, when movements become prohibited in all daily existance activities such as reaching up for the cupboard, shampooing, or steering the vehicle wheel.

* An Unfreezing Phase lasting also up to one year, when range of motion and functionality slowly recover. In this time, folk influenced put up with much pain and keep taking pharmaceuticals that may only cure the symptoms, while also having unpleasant side-effects and being ineffective at actually helping to cure shoulder pain, hence not the way to go!

A frozen shoulder treatment based primarily on explicit deltoid muscle exercises correctly invented by a pro consultant can seriously cut down recuperation times from many months to few weeks. It is necessary to know that these exercises are dissimilar from shoulder routine exercise programmes performed in gymnasiums, and must be performed with a particularly light resistance. It’s no use picking up exercises here and there to concoct an amateurish program because this may even exacerbate a frozen shoulder pain condition, leading to never-ending torture. You DON’T have to live with pain anymore! Take action today with the appropriate physical therapy and take that first step to cure shoulder pain.

Frozen Shoulder Treatment Options

A patient may ask the following : “I know this is a dumb question , but is a frozen shoulder permanent?” I straight away warranted her that her query wasn’t dumb, but in reality a slightly good question . there may be much longer lasting effects if the shoulder isn’t treated correctly. In a few cases I have witnessed the effects last an entire life.

Thus the woman’s query “Is frozen shoulder permanent?” turns out to be a vital question needing good answers.

this could place the shoulder at serious risk for cuff tears, arthritis, and possible osteopenia ( thinning of the bone ). All bones need weight bearing stress and stress at the muscle / tendon juncture to maintain ideal health. Thus after many months of reduced use and range of motion due to agony and stiffness, the shoulder joint can really go to pot to a point where comprehensive recovery becomes terribly tricky or maybe even impossible.

These long-term effects can occur with any condition that constraints the joints mobility for a period like bursitis, rotator cuff tears, or immobilization after an arm fracture, not just frozen shoulder pain. Permanent changes however can be reduced with early correct exercise under the steering of a consultant or approved physical specialist. As the redness quietens down, one can start to add in progressive stretching and joint mobilization to extend functional ROM.

In the second stages or unfreezing stage, more forceful stretching can be applied simultaneous with progressive rotator cuff bolstering to return the extremity to full mobility. This perspective of treatment is what can make a frozen shoulder permanent. Frozen shoulder is a disorder where there’s rigidity, agony and difficulty of movement of your shoulders.

It’s also known in the medical world as adhesive capsulitis. If you’re one of those going through frozen shoulder, you would most likely suffer pain even from straightforward dressing and undressing, in sleeping as well as the various other pain and problems it brings. Fortunately, there are cures for frozen shoulder that can help you relieve the agony and help you to get your shoulders into motion. It is vital to take note though this condition have stages and at some stages, the agony and rigidity may not respond well to any treatments.

With this, it’s also crucial to educate yourself about this disorder. Read all that you can about this disorder to help find the best solutions for the agony and rigidity. One of the best cures for frozen shoulder is physical care. You can ask your physical specialist to steer you thru exercises that may help you shed the discomfort and permit your shoulders to get back to its standard movements. Application of heat into the influenced shoulder is one of the cures for frozen shoulders that you can really do before your stretching exercises. This can help in alleviating pain on the area also. Range of motion exercises are also beneficial in ‘de-freezing’ your shoulders. These are really extremely simple exercises to do but the challenge is to do it regularly. If you’re striving to put an end point to your frozen shoulder, ensure you have the dedication to do it constantly. In acupuncture, terribly small needles are placed in certain points of your body to increase blood flow, improve movement and relieve pain. Typically utilized in relieving strain and in relaxing an exhausted body, acupuncture is also seen to be a good cure for this shoulder problem.

Massage also provides help in reducing pain of frozen shoulder as it helps relieve stress in the encompassing muscles of your shoulder joints.

I’m always very emphatic about making sure you have the proper diagnosis. It’s a must if your to get the proper treatment. Here’s a solid, related article to give you a better idea of what your dealing with.

The rotator cuff is a piece of engineering genius. It is a group of four small muscles that are located in our shoulder and hold the joint together allowing us the wide range of movement that we enjoy in our shoulder. They all start on the shoulder blade and connect to the head of the humerus keeping it pressed against the socket of the shoulder joint.

If you have a healthy shoulder you should be able to swing it in a 360 degree arc in almost any direction. The only thing that stops you is that your body gets in the way. This is due to the fact that the socket of the ball and socket shoulder joint is extremely shallow. It resembles a golf tee with the ball of the arm bone sitting on top of it in a shallow depression. It is the rotator cuff that does the majority of the work in holding the joint together as you swing your arms around.

It pulls the arm into this socket whenever you lift something. There are four small muscles that make up the rotator cuff and despite them being so important to us we nearly all tend to neglect them with potentially disastrous results.

If it is weak we can’t lift as well, we are at risk of shoulder injuries like dislocations, strains and sprains. Weakness of the rotator cuff puts extra load on other muscles and when you think that there are seventeen different muscles involved in moving the shoulder there is a lot of potential for injury when we neglect this group of muscles.

Because we use the rotator cuff all the time without thinking it is a group of muscles that is prone to injury. Any injury to the rotator cuff can cause swelling and because it is made up of four closely connected muscles there is always an opportunity for inflamed muscles to get pinched by bones and other muscles causing severe shoulder pain and further damage.

A rotator cuff injury can be debilitating with severe pain not only in the shoulder but also running down the arm. Classic symptoms are restricted movement especially when reaching overhead or behind you. The pain can worsen in time as once the muscles become inflamed they can catch on the bones of the shoulder causing further injury and inflammation.

Traditional treatment of rotator cuff injuries involves anti-inflammatory drugs and pain killers followed by physiotherapy to restore the strength of the shoulder joint. If the damage is severe surgery may be needed to repair damaged tendons or to free up trapped tendons although this is comparatively rare.

Here is another great read by Rex Taylor to encourage you to heal your frozen shoulder pain.

There are a myriad of ways to treat a frozen shoulder these days, some of which are good and some which may leave the sufferer with more pain and loss of motion than they started with. This article will cover a couple of key components to successful frozen shoulder treatment, and a few treatment programs to avoid.

The first key element in any treatment program is consistency. Whether you are in your mid twenties (yes, this age group suffers as well), a baby boomer, or a senior in the 60 plus range, you must stay consistent with the prescribed treatment on a daily basis for at least 3 weeks before abandoning the program for another one, or worse, quitting altogether. Now if you’re seeing increases in range of motion or function after 3 weeks, you may need to stay with your program another 4-5 weeks for maximum gains. The reason is that it takes up to 3 weeks to recover from initial irritation from stretching or breaking loose adhesions that may have formed in the joint capsule.

The second key element in successful frozen shoulder treatment is intensity. All too often I see patients “going through the motions” of a well designed program without sufficient intensity and become discouraged because lack of results. Correct intensity varies from one individual to another but can easily be learned in the first few sessions. Thinking of the phrase “medium-to-strong, but not fully strong” and apply it to each exercise. For instance, if you are stretching in a particular direction, you should feel a “medium-to-strong” stretch, but not fully strong or unbearably painful, and hold that stretch.

As far as unsuccessful treatments, a few guidelines apply as to which ones to avoid:

Programs that sound gimmicky (i.e holding the non-burning end of a lit candle in your ear will probably not help your frozen shoulder)

Programs that are not research-based or evidence-based (i.e. programs where the author has no credentials)

Programs that promise instant relief of symptoms (i.e. “Cure your frozen shoulder overnight!”)

Programs based only on relief of symptoms and no focus on return of function

These are just a few red flags to watch for, however there are a few good programs available and would encourage anyone seeking frozen shoulder treatment to make sure they meet some of the criteria above.

Frozen shoulder pain is one of the most common shoulder conditions and one of the most disabling. It owes its name to the fact that the sufferer has the affected shoulder range of motion severely limited. Typically the person affected has trouble reaching up for cupboards, shampooing, steering the car wheel and so on. This is made even worse by the long recovery times to regain full range and mobility.

After you read this article, you will have aquired a solid base of information where you will KNOW whether or not you have frozen shoulder, as well as how to take the next step in how to properly treat it.

Frozen shoulder pain is a relatively common condition that affects many people around the globe. It’s technically called adhesive capsulitis due to the nature of the disease. There is a capsule of sorts that surrounds the shoulder muscles which contracts and stiffens up,hence the name, and the pain. It also bears mentioning that when this capsule contracts and scars, becoming ‘adhesive’,it tends to severely restrict a persons range of motion. It tends to be especially hard with arm movements across the body and in reaching over the head.

Why does a person get frozen shoulder pain in the first place you may ask? Ask a dozen people and you will probably get a dozen answers. They could all be both right and wrong at the same time. Meaning that what caused the condition in one person may not be the same cause in another person. So what are the various suspected instigators of this insidious disease?

-Previous injury to the general shoulder area

-Hormonal imbalances, especially in the thyroid gland

-Diabetes

-Repetitive motion or strain without proper stretching and rest

There are more, but you get the idea. Perhaps more to the point, the cause is not so much necessary as is finding the proper shoulder physical therapy. After all is said and done it may even lead you to sports medicine careers.

While the cause of frozen shoulder pain is largely debated among various health professionals and lay people alike, the general progression to be expected is for the most part agreed upon.

-Stage one: A freezing phase; Symptoms being acute pain, tending to be worse at night making sleep hard if not impossible. Range of motion has not yet become restricted much,if at all.

-Stage two: A frozen phase; Symptoms being lowering pain levels but with your range of motion becoming severely limted. Most people find this to be the hardest phase to cope with.

-Stage three: A thawing phase; Symptoms being,as the name implies,a gradual diminishing of the remaining pain along with a freeing up of movement again.

Now that you know the potential causes and the stages of frozen shoulder pain, how do you treat it?

Surgery, manual manipulation under anesthesia, and injections of steroids are options that I do not agree with, and quite frankly believe are largely unnecesasry.

The best form of treatment is a qualified shoulder physical therapy program created by someone that knows what there doing. Using such a program will lead to a speedy recovery and minimize the time a person will go through the above mentioned stages of pain and discomfort. Now that your armed with knowledge and can make an informed decision on how to treat your frozen shoulder pain, click on the button below and see if the following program is right for you.

Stiffness and pain that limit shoulder motion with adhesive capsulitis is primarily due to painful adhesions that form on the surface of the joint capsule. However in the early stages of this condition, some loss of motion is due to protective muscle guarding and spasm, which can limit the effectiveness of stretching exercises and in most cases actually increase shoulder pain with stretching!

What happens is the patient is given a series of stretching exercises by their therapist in hopes to stretch or break adhesions, but because their shoulder may already be in an inflamed state, these exercises only inflame their shoulder more, thereby causing more pain, more inflammation, and more stiffness. Therefore these stretches are not doing what they are designed to do because of the protective muscle guarding. In the early inflammatory stages the patient should use frozen shoulder massage techniques to gain range of motion and allow the irritation to settle down before begin more aggressive with other stretching or ROM movements. When a person is given aggressive stretching exercises by their PT it’s no wonder they soon give up!

One way to overcome this vicious cycle of pain is to use specific muscle release techniques. By locating these muscles and applying graduated pressure you can get the spasms to “let go”, thereby instantly improving joint motion. Sometimes the outcome is very dramatic and the patient can gain 20-30 degrees or more in one session. This can be repeated as often as necessary to loosen the shoulder and provide the patient with more pain-free function. These techniques require visual instruction and are too complex to cover within a text article. However here is a description of one of the massage techniques for frozen shoulder that can easily be visualized:

Lie on on a bed on your stomach close to the edge with your affected arm hanging off of the bed

Have a partner place their fingers at the back of the arm pit (axilla) and then move their fingers approximately 1.5 to 2 inches laterally toward the spine.

Have them start with light steady pressure and gradually increase the pressure to somewhat strong over a period of 30-45 seconds, then suddenly release. Repeat 3-5 times.

Next have them begin to passively raise your arm towards your head while applying the same pressure in the spot described above. Movements should only occur in 5-10 degree increments with graduated pressure and release.

It’s a good idea to start with heat first if available. Never push into pain and, as always, consult your doctor before beginning any massage techniques for frozen shoulder or any exercise or stretching plan.

How is a strange sounding word such as reiki (pronounced ray-key) related to healing your frozen shoulder? Simple,it helps to unblock stagnant energy in your meridian system which can and does cause frozen shoulder pain.

At your wits end and not sure what else to do? Well alongside a solid shoulder physical therapy program, using an energy based healing system such as reiki or EFT is absolutely crucial in my opinion.

Gentle and noninvasive, energy body work can be the missing link in your frozen shoulder treatment program,so I strongly encourage you to look into it and find a qualified practicioner.

On the other hand, check out the following video for some basic do-it-yourself reiki treatments. ps-Tell me the guy in the video doesn’t remind you of a new age George Carlin!
