If you have a frozen shoulder diagnosed by your physician and have done any research on this condition, then you are aware of the 3 stages by now: Stage 1 – Increasing pain in the shoulder joint with daily activities or range of motion, Stage 2 – Increasing stiffness and loss of motion, but usually less pain, and Stage 3 – Shoulder range of motion beginning to increase slowly with return of functional abilities. Hopefully if you have begun a frozen shoulder exercise program then you are experiencing results. But what if you are not?

If your progress is less than desired then you might add these tips to boost your results:

Try a very warm shower, or even better a very warm bath just prior to beginning your exercise. The moist heat will increase local blood flow and extensibility (stretchiness) of the tissues in and around the shoulder joint.

Start with good posture before beginning each exercise. If you look in the mirror and your natural relaxed posture reveals rounded shoulders and upper back and your chin is protruding forward, this will lessen the amount of motion you will be able to obtain. Retract your chin slightly, sit up tall or stand tall, and roll your shoulders backwards before beginning any range of motion exercise. By doing this you place your affected shoulder in a more natural position and will make the frozen shoulder exercise more effective.

Increase your frequency and intensity of each exercise session. You should be stretching and strengthening several times a day, but each session should be more brief with focused intensity rather than 2-3 long drawn out sessions. You will see quicker results by not allowing the shoulder to stiffen up between sessions that are too far apart.

The tips above will boost the effectiveness of your frozen shoulder treatment and increase your motivation as you will see results sooner. Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program and make sure your program is designed by a professional or licensed clinician.

In it the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint contracts and forms scar tissues.

Agony is repeated and certain movements could cause unexpected onset of excruciating agony and cramping that will last many mins.

Frozen shoulder is affecting about 2 % of the general population. It has effects on most typically patients between the ages of forty and sixty years, is commoner in ladies and usually is affecting the non dominant shoulder. This condition, for which an actual cause isn’t known, can last from 5 months to three or 4 years or longer (IF you do not get the proper therapy for frozen shoulder) and is thought in a number of cases to be due to injury or damage to the area.

The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint. The ball is the pinnacle of the arm bone ( the humeral head ), and the socket is a component of the shoulder blade ( the glenoid ). Surrounding this ball-and-socket joint is a capsule of tissue that envelops the joint. Routinely , the shoulder joint permits more motion than any other joint in the body. When a patient develops a frozen shoulder, the capsule that surrounds the shoulder joint becomes contracted. The patients form bands of scar tissue called adhesions. The contraction of the capsule and the formation of the adhesions cause the frozen shoulder to become stiff and cause movement to become very agonizing. The following are ‘normal’ timeframes which can and probably will occur if you do not get the right therapy for frozen shoulder ASAP.

* Stage one : The “freezing” or unpleasant stage, that might last from 6 weeks to 9 months, and in which the patient has a slow onset of agony. As the discomfort becomes worse, the shoulder loses motion.

* Stage 2 : The “frozen” or adhesive stage is indicated by a slow improvement suffering discomfort but the rigidity remains. This stage typically lasts 4 months to nine months.

* Stage 3 : The “thawing” or recovery, when shoulder motion slowly returns toward ordinary. This usually lasts 5 months to twenty-six months. But full range of movement won’t be regained. Doctors have described the standard course of a frozen shoulder as having 3 stages:. Frozen shoulder happens more often in patients with diabetes, prolonged inflammatory arthritis of the shoulder, or after chest or breast surgery.

Long-term immobility of the shoulder joint can put folk in danger.

Treatment could be unpleasant and taxing and consists of medicine, physical care and massage treatment. Physical treatment can take weeks to months for recovery, depending on the scale of the scarring of the tissues round the shoulder. Discomfort and inflammation can be controlled with drugs and NSAID’s.

Infrequently frozen shoulders are impervious to treatment. Patients with resistant frozen shoulders can be given consideration for release of the scar tissue by arthroscopic surgery or manipulation of the scarred shoulder under anesthesia. This manipulation is performed to physically break up the scar tissue of the joint capsule. It carries the chance of breaking the arm bone ( humerus fracture ). It is vital for patients that endure manipulation to take part in an active exercise plan for the shoulder after the process. It is just with continued exercise of the shoulder that mobility and function is optimized, so please, choose the right therapy for frozen shoulder.

Your here because you have an issue and you need to heal shoulder pain. Well here is some information to get you aquainted with the various potential sources of said condition as well as what you can do about it.

Generally speaking, the pain associated with frozen shoulder is more of a dull, throbbing ache versus a sharp, acute pain, however it can be either/both in some cases. It tends to feel better to keep the shoulder joint from moving around, which ironically,is the treatment needed to heal it (done properly of course).

Frozen shoulder pain can extend downward into the arm, across into the back area, as well as upwards into the neck. Although generally focused in the shoulder girdle area, it can indeed cause imbalances and discomfort just about anywhere in the body due to how interconnected all of the joints and muscles are.

Range of motion becomes severely limited, making it hard to do otherwise simple things such as buttoning up your shirt, combing your hair, showering, etc. Reaching across the body and above the head are especially difficult and painful.
Other things that most people take for granted such as picking up their children, driving a car, typing at a desk, etc etc can be downright agonizing to someone with this painful affliction.

Lack of sleep is a major problem that tends to stem from shoulder pain of any sort. Lying on your side, your back, your belly, they all seem to cause enough discomfort to prevent a good nights rest, if you get any sleep at all. There are special pillows to help with the contours of your shoulder to prevent excess strain as you are in bed, but you really need to address the condition itself and heal it.

If you are suffering from a rotator cuff injury, bursitis, or arthritis, those need altogether different treatments. It’s important to get the right diagnosis in order to heal shoulder pain properly, that’s the first step.

There are many causes of frozen shoulder, which is what makes it one of the more mysterious conditions out there. Generally speaking, the shoulder girdle starts to thicken and contract the capsule of tissue that encases the shoulder joint. This is what then causes the restriction of motion and pain in that area. Theories abound of related causes including but not limited to:

-Hypo or hyper-thyroidism or other glandular disorders

-Previous injury to the general shoulder area

-Extended lack of use of the shoulder area

-Various other seemingly unrelated diseases

Frozen shoulder is a common cause of shoulder pain. But is it related to cold weather or to cold exposure? Could the cause of your shoulder pain really relate to the outer temperature of your shoulder joint?

Frozen shoulder is also known as adhesive capsulitis and the two terms are used almost interchangeably. The use of the word adhesive relates to the fact that the joint surfaces inside the painful shoulder become sticky because of inflammation in the joint.

Doctor’s first recognized adhesive capsulitis in the late 1800′s when they realized that it was a different condition from arthritis of the shoulder. Frozen shoulder is not a form of arthritis and it does not develop into arthritis – this is worth remembering because many patients do worry that their shoulder pain will lead on to arthritis.

The shoulder pain from frozen shoulder can start quite quickly after an injury or it may sometimes develop more gradually without any obvious trigger. But where does the word frozen fit into the shoulder pain picture?

A frozen shoulder can cause severe shoulder pain and may produce pain that spreads down the arm from the shoulder towards the elbow or the wrist. Women with frozen shoulder find it very difficult to unfasten their bra because they cannot get their hand around behind their back. Men can’t reach the back pocket of their trousers because their range of shoulder movement is limited.

One of the first textbooks to devote attention to adhesive capsulitis was published in the 1930′s and it only devoted a few pages to the subject of frozen shoulder. The author said that frozen shoulder pain was common, but little was known about the cause or the problem inside the joint. Things have changed a lot in medicine since 1930 but doctor’s still don’t have a clear answer to the question of what triggers the process that leads to a frozen shoulder.

About twenty years after this textbook was written a surgeon tried to perform surgical operations on the shoulders of patients who were suffering from frozen shoulder pain. During his attempts he found that the gristly capsule around the joint was stuck to the bone surface. He had to peel it away like a Band-Aid or elastoplasts strip. Because of this he coined the name Adhesive Capsulitis. The terms frozen shoulder and adhesive capsulitis have been used interchangeably ever since.

So why does a frozen shoulder get stiff? Will exposure to cold nighttime air bring on the stiffness and the shoulder pain?

Inflammation anywhere in the body causes stickiness. The cells that control the inflammation process trigger a reaction in the tissues of the body and tend to cause adjacent bits to stick to each other – not usually on a permanent basis but certainly for some weeks or months.

Now – a capsule of gristle surrounds the shoulder joint and the capsule has a little flap or bag that hangs down into the armpit. If this little bag fills up with sticky fluid then the sides of it will stick together – making it very difficult to lift your arm above your head.

If the front of the capsule sticks itself to the bone of the upper arm then you’ll find it nearly impossible to rotate your arm properly – especially if you are trying to reach round into your back pocket, or to fasten your bra if you’re a woman.

Add some general sticking of the area around the shoulder muscles and tendons and you can surely now see why the shoulder seems to freeze up and stiffen. It’s quite literally stuck with a kind of natural glue! Adhesive Capsulitis indeed.

The end result of the frozen shoulder process is that the capsule around the joint shrinks or contracts and stays tight and stiff for many, many months before it gradually recovers.

So – does cold exposure really leave you with a sticky frozen shoulder? No, it doesn’t but there’s a lot still to be discovered about this unusual condition. If you have it then don’t panic – the pain will eventually resolve. In the meantime you can read more about frozen shoulder pain and frozen shoulder treatments on my website, where you’ll also find useful information about other joint and muscle pain conditions.

Dr Cameron has also created an electronic book on the subject of frozen shoulder. You can explore it and download a copy on his website.

Dr Gordon Cameron is a specialist in joint pain based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is an expert in joint pain, lower back pain and in whiplash injury

Frozen shoulder, regardless of the cause, has the same set of symptoms. Why is it important to know the specific symptoms of frozen shoulder? So that you can differentiate between true frozen shoulder pain and separate, yet perhaps similar, shoulder injury. This way you can get the proper treatment for your condition.

Here is a list of typical signs that you may have a frozen shoulder:

-First and foremost,a constant, aching pain that could be either dull or sharp in the shoulder joint. So be sure to not ignore this early warning sign. It could save you alot of time and pain in the future.

-You notice your range of motion has become limited. It’s especially harder to reach above your head and/or across your body. If you have problems with common activites such as buttoning your shirt, combing your hair, brushing your teeth, scratching your head, etc…it could be frozen shoulder.

Your sleeping patterns have become disrupted due to an abnormal discomfort in the shoulder area. This one is especially self-perpetuating. We regenerate in our sleep,so without deep, restful sleep, any injury is just going to get worse.

If you or a loved one is suffering from any of the above mentioned issues, use this information and go see a qualified practicioner to properly, definatively diagnose frozen shoulder with the proper tests. A quick note, there are ways to achieve this without the harmful affects of a radioactive x-ray or mri. Found out how at the above linked article on how to diagnose frozen shoulder.
