It&#8217;s a medical condition that can cause extreme pain and a very limited range of motion(ROM) in the shoulder joint (glenohumeral socket) area. Frozen shoulder creates intense contraction of the capsule that surrounds and supports the shoulder girdle,hence its name adhesive CAPSULITIS. Although many articles and &#8216;experts&#8217; will claim that the cause of frozen <a class="ld_link" href="http://www.frozenshoulderpainblog.com/frozen-shoulder/shoulder-pain" target=" " title="shoulder pain">shoulder pain</a> is unknown,that simply isn&#8217;t true. What is true however,is that it has a multitude of causitive factors. These include,but certainly aren&#8217;t limited to:</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Frozen shoulder starts with a stiffening,contracting effect of the shoulder area where adhesive bands are formed,restricting motion. It then proceeds through two additional stages as is shown below.</span></p>

<li><span style="font-size: medium;">-First,the painful,freezing state. This stage normally has the highest level of acute pain. Range of motion is starting to becoming impaired,but its not nearly as stiff the next phase. <p>Dear Gary,</p>
<p>With business being slow due to the fact that I live off the beach, I decided to work for a month or so doing physical therapy in a rehab center within a nursing home. These are people that were in hospital who can&#8217;t go home yet because they are unable to care for themselves and thus must spend a few weeks getting better.</p>
<p>Normally I hate working in a nursing home because it is not challenging enough for me. But to my surprise I have had an amazing time in the past two weeks. I have been going around tapping everyone, from nurses to aids to bosses to patients.</p>
<p>First my boss complained of severe Right knee pain and tightness. Her 0-10 intensity level was an 8 for pain and in Range of motion she was only 70/90. I only worked on her for about 10 minutes for pain and for tightness. She got off the mat and wide-eyed said, &#8221; I can&#8217;t believe it but my pain is completely gone. I checked her hamstring range and it had increased to 90/90 a perfect hamstring.</p>
<p>Next one of my patients who was in her 80&#8242;s was feeling sick to her stomach and had been that way for a few days. The nurse had called the doctor and he agreed to send her to the hospital for tests. I was to walk her in therapy first. I asked her if I could tap her to get rid of her stomach pain. She agreed and within 10 minutes she was up and moving fine without much pain.</p>
<p>I saw her in the hallway later that day and asked how the tests went? She answered, &#8221; I changed my mind and decided I was feeling much better and the nurse canceled my hospital visit.</p>
<p>This kind of stuff happened all day every day with all my patients. I won&#8217;t bore you but two I must tell.</p>
<p>One gentleman, in his 50s, not my patient, but I interfered in his therapy (like I know everything right?) Well he had had a brain operation and was left paralyzed on his left leg. To make matters worse his right shoulder was classified as a <a class="ld_link" href="http://www.frozenshoulderpainblog.com/" target=" " title="frozen shoulder">frozen shoulder</a> which was hindering his progress because he needed his arms to pull himself up in the parallel bars. His range was about 90 degrees and normal range was 180. He also had severe pain upon movement of that arm.</p>
<p>Well I worked with him for five minutes while his therapist was seeing to another patient. Within that time I got about 30 degrees extra movement and the pain had diminished about 20%.</p>
<p>The next day I asked his therapist if I could work a little more on him. I allowed her to test his range. She tested it at 130/180 which was where EFT had got him the day before. I worked EFT for 10 min. and I called his therapist over again to re-measure him. Now normally range like this takes weeks and weeks to achieve, that is why I wanted her to re-test. She looked a little annoyed thinking that she had just tested him and why was I asking her again. To her shock it was 175/180, and the man had no pain through the motion. I downloaded your EFT manual and gave it to him today to read and told him to apply it to himself every hour on the hour for a few days.</p>
<p>Another EFT miracle happened yesterday. One of my patients who is 72 years old, has had a very difficult time walking. Her balance is very poor. I had been working with her for a few days just doing regular therapy, when yesterday she said &#8221; I am so afraid of falling, what happens if I fall and I can&#8217;t get up?. Well I began to tap her for her fear of falling, I worked for about ten minutes until I felt secure enough to walk her again to test her fear. Well she walked with so much control that it shocked me (which usually doesn&#8217;t happen too much any more). Then she shocked me further when she stated&#8221; I have not walked this good since I was in my 30s. You should have seen her smile.</p>
<p>Today I worked on her some more. Then I had her walking backwards, without loss of balance. She pushed herself around the nursing home shouting how great she was able to walk. She told me that her husband didn&#8217;t believe it and that he wants to come to see her in therapy. She is forbidden to walk unless she is in therapy because of her history of falls.</p>
<p>If only out-patient facilities were willing to let me work on patients like this. But I know it would never happen. To get a frozen shoulder or a replaced knee better within a few visits would put them out of business in a very short time. For now I grab what I can get away with.</p>

<p>If you have a <a class="ld_link" href="http://www.frozenshoulderpainblog.com/" target=" " title="frozen shoulder">frozen shoulder</a> diagnosed by your physician and have done any research on this condition, then you are aware of the 3 stages by now: Stage 1 &#8211; Increasing pain in the shoulder joint with daily activities or range of motion, Stage 2 &#8211; Increasing stiffness and loss of motion, but usually less pain, and Stage 3 &#8211; Shoulder range of motion beginning to increase slowly with return of functional abilities. Hopefully if you have begun a frozen shoulder exercise program then you are experiencing results. But what if you are not?</p>
<p>If your progress is less than desired then you might add these tips to boost your results:</p>
<ul>
<li>Try a very warm shower, or even better a very warm bath just prior to beginning your exercise. The moist heat will increase local blood flow and extensibility (stretchiness) of the tissues in and around the shoulder joint.</li>
<li>Start with good posture before beginning each exercise. If you look in the mirror and your natural relaxed posture reveals rounded shoulders and upper back and your chin is protruding forward, this will lessen the amount of motion you will be able to obtain. Retract your chin slightly, sit up tall or stand tall, and roll your shoulders backwards before beginning any range of motion exercise. By doing this you place your affected shoulder in a more natural position and will make the frozen shoulder exercise more effective.</li>
<li>Increase your frequency and intensity of each exercise session. You should be stretching and strengthening several times a day, but each session should be more brief with focused intensity rather than 2-3 long drawn out sessions. You will see quicker results by not allowing the shoulder to stiffen up between sessions that are too far apart.</li>
</ul>
<p>The tips above will boost the effectiveness of your frozen shoulder treatment and increase your motivation as you will see results sooner. Always consult your doctor before beginning any exercise program and make sure your program is designed by a professional or licensed clinician.</p>

<p>&#8220;Causes &#8211; How does frozen shoulder occur?<br />Frozen shoulder occurs when there is thickening and swelling of the flexible tissue surrounding your shoulder joint. This tissue is known as a capsule.<br />Your shoulder is a ball and socket joint, in which the end of your upper arm bone (humerus) sits in the socket of your shoulder blade (scapula). The shoulder capsule is fully stretched when your arm is raised above your head, and hangs down as a small pouch when your arm is lowered.<br />If you have frozen shoulder, it is thought that bands of scar tissue form in your shoulder capsule, causing it to thicken, swell and tighten. This leaves less space for your upper arm bone in the joint, and makes any movement stiff and painful.</p>
<p>Why does frozen shoulder occur?<br />It is not fully understood exactly why frozen shoulder occurs, and in some cases, it may not be possible to identify a cause. However, there are several risk factors which make developing frozen shoulder more likely.</p>
<p>Shoulder injury or surgery<br />It is possible to develop frozen shoulder after a shoulder or arm injury, such as a broken bone (fracture), or after having surgery to your shoulder area.<br />This may be because keeping your arm and shoulder immobile (still) for long periods of time while you recover may cause your shoulder capsule to tighten up from lack of use. For this reason, it is important not to ignore a painful injury to your shoulder area, and to always see your GP.&#8221;</p>

<p>Five months ago I taught Sue (not her real name) to tap. &nbsp;She has been a practice member of mine for seven years. &nbsp;In the morning her pain was so bad that it took her four hours just to get off the couch. &nbsp;Sometimes she didn&#8217;t get off of the couch all day.&nbsp; She no longer rode motorcycles or antique shopped with her husband. &nbsp;She had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.&nbsp; Sue had gotten better over time and was riding motorcycles and shopping with her husband, but she still had some nagging pains.</p>
<p>Today she came in for a session and began talking about her shoulder pain (rated at a 10 on the 0-10 scale). &nbsp;I asked if she was tapping.</p>
<p><em>Sue: Yes</em></p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; What are you saying about your shoulder pain?</em></p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; Even though I have this shoulder pain I completely love and accept myself.</em></p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; If your shoulder could talk what would it say?</em></p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; I know it would say that I am still angry at the man that hit me.</em></p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; Are you willing to tap on this issue right now?</em></p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; Yes.</em></p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; Tell me about the accident. &nbsp;When was it? &nbsp;What happened?</em></p>
<p><em>Sue: It was twelve years ago. &nbsp;Some man hit my car. &nbsp;It was his fault. &nbsp;I am so angry at him.</em></p>
<p>We then tapped on, <em>Even though I had that accident twelve years ago, and it filled my right shoulder with pain, and I&#8217;m still angry at the man that hit me.</em> &nbsp;She reported moving from a 10 to an 8 on a scale of 0 to 10.</p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; Tell me some more about the accident.</em></p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; That man said that I wasn&#8217;t hurt. &nbsp;He didn&#8217;t help me. &nbsp;Someone else had to help me.&nbsp; I am still so angry at him.</em></p>
<p>We then tapped on, <em>Even though that man said I wasn&#8217;t hurt, the pain that remains in my shoulder, how mean the man was to me, he didn&#8217;t know how I felt, what made him think that I was not hurt, how angry I still am at that man, he didn&#8217;t help me.</em>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We called him a few choice names which made Sue laugh and helped her talk louder while tapping.&nbsp; At this point she said that she thinks about the accident every day; blaming this man and holding on to the anger. &nbsp;She said, &#8220;That is so silly, isn&#8217;t it? &nbsp;He is not thinking about me.&#8221;&nbsp; Now she was at 6 out of 10.</p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; Tell me more about the accident.</em></p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; The car was brand new.&nbsp; I had wanted that red car forever.&nbsp; Now it was a mess. &nbsp;I felt so devastated. &nbsp;He didn&#8217;t even have insurance.</em></p>
<p>We tapped, <em>Even though my car was brand new and I had wanted it forever and it was now a mess&#8230; </em>&nbsp;This brought Sue down to 3 out of 10.</p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; I feel so much better.&nbsp; The pain is going away.</em></p>
<p><em>Dr. Kay:&nbsp; Is there anything else that comes to mind?</em></p>
<p><em>Sue:&nbsp; He didn&#8217;t care about me or my car.</em></p>
<p>We tapped one more time.&nbsp; <em>Even though the man that hit me didn&#8217;t care about me or my car</em>&hellip;&nbsp; After a round of tapping I had Sue, with her hand on her heart; say that she forgives herself and the man that hit her. &nbsp;They were both doing the very best they could.</p>
<p>Sue was now at zero out of 10!&nbsp; She was so excited. &nbsp;She said, &#8220;I see! &nbsp;I needed more details. &nbsp;My shoulder has hurt for twelve years. &nbsp;The pain is completely gone.&nbsp; Amazing!&#8221;&nbsp;</p>
<p>We talked a few more minutes. &nbsp;All Sue could do is laugh.&nbsp; She said she felt so light and happy.&nbsp; What a relief to lay down a pain she had carried for twelve years.&nbsp; Checking in one month later Sue said that she has had no shoulder pain and that her life is changing for the better everyday.</p>

<p>On my daily walk, I would on occasion stop and converse with a widowed lady of 84 years and attempt to cheer her up. &nbsp;This day I saw that she had her right arm in a sling, and I asked her what happened. &nbsp;She told me she had been putting clothes and such in a series of suitcases, in what she said was in preparation for a move to Colorado to a senior hospice.</p>
<p>She overloaded one suitcase on a bed, and when she attempted to take it off the bed, not realizing the weight, she held on to it and it pulled her shoulder out of the socket.&nbsp; Bad move, and a friend took her to the doctor and he x-rayed the shoulder and said that the muscles and ligaments were injured and that all he could do was to put her in a sling and that she would be lucky to use the arm in 6 months, if ever.</p>
<p>She was in extreme pain if she tried to use the arm. &nbsp;I told her I had learned a procedure that may help, and would she let me use it on her. &nbsp;She said yes and I spent about 35 minutes explaining EFT and the points to tap.</p>
<p>On starting, she said the 0-10 level of intensity of the pain was a 20. &nbsp;We started the tapping and the first round brought the pain down to an 8 out of 10. &nbsp;She was flabbergasted, as this event had happened less than a week ago, and even at night she would awaken with extreme pain if she moved.</p>
<p>I proceeded with the second round of tapping, and upon asking her what was the pain now, she said it was gone. &nbsp;She then removed the sling, and whirled her arms about and was like a child that had a pain removed.&nbsp; Needless to say, I was then the one that was flabbergasted.</p>
<p>She went back the following week to her doctor with her sling in place and when asked how the pain was, she tore the sling off and whirled her arms around and the doctor, stood with his mouth open and asked her what had happened. &nbsp;She told him about me, and what I had done, and upon recovering his senses he said it was probably a freak event. &nbsp;She said to him that he would be wise to look into this and he said he was too busy to follow weird protocols.</p>
<p>She left and has not had a pain since and uses her arm as she always has.</p>

Here we&#8217;ll look closer at shoulder anatomy, targeting on the ligaments and joint capsule. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><em>Shoulder Ligaments</em> vs. Joint Capsule The shoulder joint capsule is a band of connective tissues that encompasses the head of the humerus. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"> It helps to hold the humerus in the glenoid ( socket ) when the shoulder is at rest. While many of us think about these tissues connecting our skeletal matter, the joint capsule plays a crucial role in this function as well. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Not like the knee, which has ligaments that are individual bands of tissue, the deltoid has thickenings in places of the joint capsule that are referred to as ligaments. Let me explain&#8230; </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"> The shoulder ligaments aren&#8217;t seperate from the joint capsule. In reality, they are not really ligaments at all, in the way you suspect about ligaments like the ACL or PCL in the knee. They&#8217;re simply areas of tissue that are thicker than the other portions of the capsule. So, your physician may refer to the shoulder ligaments as a part of the capsule, or as ligaments, but they mean a similar thing. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">The Glenohumeral Shoulder Ligaments: The shoulder has three different areas of thickening in the capsule, which can be referred to as ligaments. These are the anterior glenohumeral ligament, inferior glenohumeral ligament, and posterior glenohumeral ligament. The ligaments provide stability to the joint, and help to restict disproportionate joint motion. Notice in the picture the way in which the inferior ligament ( or capsule ) appears to hang down from the humerus. This is significant as we discuss shoulder function. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Anterior Shoulder Ligaments Anterior Glenohumeral Ligament &#8211; sporting injury Data The anterior shoulder capsule helps to prohibit forward motion of the humerus. It also helps to limit external revolution. As will all ligaments and joint capsules, the shoulder ligaments all become tight with different motions. The anterior capsule becomes tight when the shoulder is flexed above ninety degrees, or when it is externally revolved. The anterior glenohumeral ligament is the tissue that&#8217;s wounded with 95% of all shoulder dislocations. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"> When the shoulder dislocates, it always comes forward and down. This stretches and tears the anterior part of the joint capsule, and the anterior glenohumeral ligament. The commonest position for shoulder dislocation is when the arm is out to the side, above shoulder level, and the elbow bent to ninety degrees. In this position, the anterior capsule and ligament is tight&#8230;forced motion in this position will noticeably stress the capsule, and may cause damage. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Inferior Shoulder Ligaments Inferior Glenohumeral Ligament &#8211; sporting injury Information The inferior glenohumeral ligament is a redundency of the shoulder capsule. In the picture you can see how it hangs down from the humerus&#8230;almost like there&#8217;s too much tissue there. This is not the case. You see, when the shoulder moves, the capsule must be in a position to stretch and evolve. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"> If the inferior capsule wasn&#8217;t hanging down, you would not be ready to raise your arm over your head. When the arm is raised above shoulder level, the inferior capsule starts to tighten. The inferior capsule isn&#8217;t often wounded during sports&#8230;however, it can become unacceptably tight if the arm is immobilized for a long-lasting period. This is the part of the capsule that frequently tightens down and causes frozen shoulder. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;">* Anterior fibers : from the anterior border and higher surface of the lateral clavicle. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">* Middle fibers : from the lateral margin and higher surface of the acromion </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">* Posterior fibers : from the lower lip of the posterior border of the backbone of the scapula, as far back as the triangular surface at its medial end. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Insertion: From this in depth origin the fibers come together toward their insertion, the middle passing vertically, the anterior obliquely backward and laterally, the posterior obliquely forward and laterally ; they unite in a thick tendon, which is inserted into the V-shaped deltoid tuberosity on the middle of the lateral side of the shaft of the humerus. At its insertion the <em>shoulder muscle</em> releases an enlargement to the deep fascia of the arm. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"> Innervation: The deltoid is innervated by the axillary nerve. The axillary nerve originates from the ventral rami of the C5 and C7 spinal nerves, thru the superior trunk, posterior division of the superior trunk, and the posterior twine of the brachial plexus. The axillary nerve is often damaged during operations on the axilla , for example for breast cancer. It might also be hurt by unacceptable use of crutches. </span></p>
